The Pilgrim's Progress n/e (Oxford World's Classics)
The Pilgrim's Progress n/e (Oxford World's Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Written in the mid 1600's and never been out of print - it must be good!, 25 Aug. 2014

This is a fantastic book! There are a number of free pdf versions around on the internet which I found difficult and hard going to read. However this particular version is brilliant and although most of the text probably follows what could well be described as an out of date style of writing and grammar nothing has been lost - the message is clear. The supporting notes in the margins and cross references to Biblical texts are most helpful. There are a few sections that have to be read a number of times in order to gain an understanding of what John Bunyan meant but once the meaning has been grasped all should be clear. This is probably because some of the text uses proverbs that were in common use in the 16th and 17th centuries. Well worth the money and worth reading. I've not read many books that I couldn't put down but this is one of them!

4.0 out of 5 stars Replacement for old family Bibles, 25 Aug. 2014

I bought this Bible for a number of reasons - firstly I needed to replace some old family Bibles, secondly, this is an up to date text and finally to gain a better understanding of the Old Testament. The support sections are good and well written and provide enough information and details.

I bought this book as a reference aid to another book (Word into Silence). Its an easy book to read and is well written. Like the book mentioned earlier in this review it will prompt the reader to do more research into this subject.

4.0 out of 5 stars Word into Silence, 27 July 2014

An interesting book which provides a fundamental understanding of the stages to starting of Christian Meditation. The author asks the reader in his introduction to decide if we "... want to be at peace". I found this quite thought provoking and prompted some deep thinking on my part. The process of following his steps to achieving the ultimate goal I found quite difficult to follow at times and I will have to persevere with the book and the steps described to reach an understanding of the method. I remember hearing at the closure of some church services I have attended that we must strive to reach "the peace that passes all understanding" and this is not an easy state to achieve. However I shall carry on with the book and try the methods / steps described.

It's ok - once you remember that a some of the drawings and text is a bit dated. There's lots of detail in the book although I thought that the chapters didn't seem to flow as well as they might but as a reference book its quite satisfactory. The balance between drawings and text was about right. One of problems I find with books on constructive anatomy is that they (the books) can fall between two extremes - highly detailed drawings or good outline sketches / drawings which this book falls into the latter category. The section on drawing draped figures and folds was quite useful. Not a bad buy for the money. A useful reference book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast Sketching Techniques, 22 Aug. 2013

A very good book with good tips and guides to rapid sketching. The author doesn't rule out the use of a camera, cine equipment or using photographs to develop fast sketching methods. I thought the balance between text and actual sketches as a means of learning the techniques in the artist's early learning stages was about right. Very pleased to see there were no matchstick figures! Lots of emphasis on capturing the essence of a sketch before producing a finished drawing or picture. Well worth the money.
