5.0 out of 5 stars West Country Hero Continues To Impress, 7 Jun. 2015
This review is from: True And Fast (MP3 Download)
Another assured album by West Country hero, the one and only Gaz Brookfield. Not many people release music of such a personal nature in this day and age and the fact that Gaz does it all himself make it all that more of an achievement. Songs about his diabetes (split into two songs), about moving out of a rented house and buying his own property, songs about being a solo touring artist even a song in tribute to his van that carts him around the country playing about 200 gigs a year, all are perfectly written and performed by Gaz. There is even a song that he wrote backstage at last years Glastonbury festival with Billy Shinbone that was performed live only an hour after the two performers had met! If you ever get the chance to see him live - and the chances are he will be in your town very soon - then do, as good as his albums all have been it's live that Gaz really comes into his own. There are many, many artists out there doing this kind of thing, but very few that do it as well as Gaz does. Buy with confidence, you won't be disappointed. For fans of: Frank Turner, Levellers, Will Varley, Jake Bugg, Beans On Toast...

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrical & Musical Masterpiece - Essential Purchase, 8 Dec. 2013
Gaz Brookfield's 3rd album is an assured album full of personal lyrics that will appeal to everyone. A true DIY music artist, Gaz has been plugging away on the 'pub' circuit for a few years, while supporting the likes of Frank Turner, Levellers & New Model Army but anyone who witnessed his set at Beautiful Days festival in 2013 will know he's destined for greater things.

Starting with "Land Pirate's Life", this song is a follow up to a track from his previous album about playing as the unknown support act who never gets the recognition. But over the last year he has toured with one of his musical heroes, Levellers (check out the video for the track which features Simon from Levellers as a pirate!), and this song sums up the tribulations of being a touring musician. "If These Walls Could Talk", while mentioning a pub & club in his hometown of Swindon could be related to lots of small music venues & clubs that have closed over the last few years due to various reasons. "Towns", my personal favorite on this album could best be described as Gaz's autobiography. Listing where he spent his formative years, I love the open honesty of the song. Also recommended is "Black Dog Day", a song that shows up the Levellers influence in his music while documenting how depression can creep up upon you so easily. Other tracks include a tribute to Loudon Wainwright III, who's influence can also be heard in the storytelling style of Gaz's music, songs about busking, songs about drinking - songs about life really

Overall the album (which is all played by Gaz, except the fiddle which is played by the skilled Ben Wain)moves Gaz another step up from his previous two albums (and incredible live album). I know a lot of people who have seen him live over the last year who have fallen in love with his singing & storytelling and I for one cannot recommend this album (and his others) highly enough. If you get chance you have to see him live (and with the number of gigs he plays a year that won't be difficult) as that is where you will truly see the artist at work.

Highly recommended, you will not be disappointed by this album at all.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous Pricing!!, 29 Oct. 2013
Seriously Amazon, £5.49 for 4 tracks! At most it should be priced at £2.80 - sort it out. Anyway, excellent track but I'd look elsewhere to download it

Great single from Liam and the boys. However if you are downloading this complete set you need to know that the video is in WMV format, something that Amazon have failed to inform their customers so will not play on an iPod

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Buy Ever...., 4 April 2011
While there is no denying that this is a very, very easy tent to pitch, it's one major drawback is that it does not have any inner tent lining. I bought one on a whim last year to go to a festival and actually had to leave early as all the condensation that formed on the roof of the tent, then "Rained" down on me throughout the night making sleeping impossible. Of course they don't mention this until after you've bought it and pitched it. It's now used as a play tent for the garden by my little girl, a much better use for it rather than trying to sleep under it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential album that remains timeless, 11 Mar. 2009
To say that this album got me through some bad times when it first came out is an understatement! I first heard Beth when the shop I was working in at the time was given a promo copy of her cover of "I Wish I Never Saw the Sunshine" and was instantly hooked by her incredible voice and the beauty and delicacy of her performance. I can honestly say that this has been the most important album of my life for quite a few years now. The new deluxe edition adds all of the B-Sides from the singles, the "Best Bit EP" featuring a truly astounding cover of Fred Neill's "Dolphins" with Terry Callier and "I Love How You Love Me" from the soundtrack to the film "Mojo". It's great to have all of these tracks in one place now and help to chart the progression from this to "Central Reservation" that followed. Other than an instrumental version that adds nothing to the original vocal all of these tracks are essential and help to show what has been going in the Nu-Folk genre over the past few years. Without this, artists such as Emmy the Great, Eliza Carthy and Kate Rusby might not be names on the peoples lips who don't tend to read Folk Roots! If you get the chance to see her live the songs just get even better. The opening few bars of "She Cries Your Name" still make the hairs on the back of my neck rise even now. Please, do yourself a favour and buy this NOW

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Bedroom Producers!!, 1 Jun. 2008
An interesting product to come out under Norman Cooks name. This is a selection of loops, breaks and samples that are perfect for any budding producers to loot from. Some will be very familiar from Fatboy Slim, Freakpower and Pizzaman tracks. Even more interesting are the 50 short scratches and samples at the end of the CD. Including some that would be later used by the Chemical Brothers and the main intro from Beats International's huge hit, this is perfect for any DJ's to drop as part of a set
