4.0 out of 5 stars Strong visual deterrent, 31 Aug. 2013

The only way that this could fail to be a deterrent is when one has an awning. I fitted it because it also gave protection from the inside. The main reason why it scored only four stars was because I found difficulty in aligning the boltholes exactly ( more my incompetence than a design fault)

DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide: Malta & Gozo
DK Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guide: Malta & Gozo

3.0 out of 5 stars Another good value DK guide, 14 Feb. 2013

The DK series has a good name in our household. The books are reasonably resistant to folding, and are durable enough to survive the handling which travel guides often experience. As there is only a certain amount of Malta to write about, so this volume is quite slim.
The attempt to include several maps to different scales, which fold up into the rear flap, succeeds, but contains a serious error. It advertises the island's ten best beaches, but even the travel trade there admit to there being only three. It runs foul of the Trade Description Act. You don't go to Malta to have the family build endless sandcastles in the sun. For a start, those same authorities confess to summer temperatures in the mid, or even upper, 40s.
Another weakness is the means of treating the history of the island. You don't visit passively and expect to be entertained. To get the best out of the experience it's necessary to be familiar with the history of the island.. The DK guide deals with this in bite-size chunks, based upon the location being described at the time. Thus there is no continuity which allows a clear picture of how events have followed, one after the other, to interact. A short history need not be formidable, but doesn't find a place in this slim volume.Get yourself better informed elsewhere before your departure.

4.0 out of 5 stars a useful and durable companion to Malta., 14 Feb. 2013

This map lives up to its billing. It's been folded and bent numerous times, such as in the bad weather we experienced, but still came up smiling. I have only one issue, which debars it from five stars. it lists five beaches. The tourist agencies admit to being only three, unless a wheel barrow-full of sand counts. It's not really a place to visit for its golden sands, so it's best not to force it.
Nevertheless, I'd look early to buy an insight map when equipping myself for a holiday.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value -shame about the accent, 19 Jun. 2012
A good clear picture within small dimensions and a small price. Very sensitive; pulling onto a layby only 20 metres from the main road produced a "recalculating" immediately. Same result from going twice round a French roundabout.
But why does it have to use the trendy " kilOMetres"? We don't say "kilOGrams" or "kilOWatts"
By far its most distracting feature is the computer-generated accent when in French mode. This was so much tied to phonetic pronunciation, with indistinct speech, that it was a major distraction, not asset. eg "Rudy Lokkean" meant three or four inspections before it yielded up "Rue de L'Ocean" in front of our eyes.
