4.0 out of 5 stars be ready to have new counting crows favorite songs..., 10 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This cd needs its time to mature. From the beginning, I had already recognized one standout track: 'scarecrow' had a catchy riff and was up there with the best counting crows rock songs. Bare that, i was unsure. So i listened to the cd over and over again until i discovered the various layers that house counting crows songs. The cd has an overriding theme of retrospection and the sad and lonely perception of how one's life has turned out to be. It would appear that Adam feels he's paid a price in his personal life for this rock star life he chose. 'Possibility days' is the best description of this feeling and reeks of sadness. It's up there with one of the best songs counting crows have done. 'Palisade park' is beautiful, from the trumpet intro to the various melodic tempos it goes through, like a story you never want to end. it showcases the talent of this band. However, in between the good songs, you get those that are not bad, just insignificantly average ('..lament'; 'elvis..'). In a cd that spans 9 songs, this cannot be overlooked, leaving the listener yearning for more....

Reality Bites [DVD] [1994]
Reality Bites [DVD] [1994]
Dvd ~ Winona Ryder
Price: £3.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Look no further on the best movie on Generation X, 2 Mar. 2015
This review is from: Reality Bites [DVD] [1994] (DVD)
This is the ultimate 90s movie! The direction, the script and the music transport you back to that decade and to how things were felt and visualized by the 'hip' young generation. The script is so well written, it contains amazing one liners without sounding too pretentious . The actors are so well cast, you really feel they are these people for real. The chemistry between Winona and Ethan is so spot on. Don't go into this movie, looking for action, this is more about the various feelings of pain, frustration, disillusionment and lost of way that are being felt by many of us at some point in our lives and how we do to navigate through all this. You won't necessarily get the answers by watching this movie, but you will certainly feel less alone in the process. I recommend it wholeheartedly, this is the best movie on this issue!

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing new!, 25 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This got 3 stars from me only because I have 2 other mari winsor pilates dvd and compare it to them. This is not a bad dvd, but there is little new in terms of exercises included in the workouts compared to the winsor pilates and lower body dvds. In particular the all body workout is exactly the same bar 1 exercise to the one offered in the pilates dvd. it is as if winsor only has a limited number of exercises and recycles them with each dvd which really beats the purpose of doing another one. what is new here is the attempt at pilates cardio which seems weird and unusual at first hand, but why not? what I like is that it is divided in various 15' workouts with various focus for the mums like me that have limited time to spare but would want to do something. also, I feel that the exercises are not always well explained, the camera not always focused on the various parts of the body exercised, necessary to allow a newcomer to do these workouts correctly. if you come here with a fresh eye, you will have difficulty in understanding fully all exercises, especially the first few times. so all in all, not a bad workout dvd, just more of the same from winsor. and coming from her, we have higher expectations!

5.0 out of 5 stars James at their best!, 30 July 2014
This review is from: La Petite Mort (Audio CD)
when my sister told me about the new James cd, I told her that it wasn't worth it as they had passed their artistic peak. A live concert and the purchase of 'la petite mort' made me eat my words, which could not have been further from the truth. La petite mort has been characterized as a return to form. And it truly is! I would call it a masterpiece in its genre, equal to some of their previous fab work! You have the standout, personal fav, tracks (walk like you, bitter virtue, moving on, frozen Britain...), but the rest of the album doesn't veer too far from the superb either. These are all anthemic pop/rock songs with complex beautiful melodies (amazing how a trumpet can add value to a song) and worthy genius lyrics that comment intelligently on topics like life, love and death. Tim is 54 years old and his voice hasn't wavered a bit. On the contrary, he remains one of the greatest vocalist ever (confirmed when you see them live). Really, I can't find a single reason why this shouldn't be part of anyone's cd collection. Go get it now and play it unremittingly and very loud. Oh, and if you want to see the best live concert ever, don't miss them when they are next in town!

3.0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu, 7 Feb. 2014
I am a big CC fan and just bought this cd as I had bought all their previous endeavours. unfortunately for years, I tried to connect to it, identify a few gems which would stand the test of times. Nothing! I repeatedly got a feeling of indifference as the songs were passing through without anyone catching my attention. and recently, I've decided for the umpteenth time to give it another try. and suddenly it all clicked. I started to listen and appreciate it in a way that I never did before. the first part of the cd is clearly far superior to the second one. I like the rockier side which cc explored in their most underrated gem 'recovering the satellites'. these are good rock songs, with adam's emotions screaming to get heard out of the guitar riffs. and there are some standout tracks: 1492, hanging tree, ... make you revisit the repeat button many times. but as songs progress to the 'sunday mornings' session, a feeling of mediocrity reintroduces itself. these are not bad songs, they are just mediocre. thankfully, the ending comes with a respite: 'come around' rocks and could easier have joined the first session. what I felt though throughout this record, and it's the first time I feel this in a cc record, is the feeling of deja vu. some of these songs could have been part of previous records, the riffs sounded familiar, the sequence predictable. and this is a slight disappointment for a cc record, which usually pride themselves in offering their audience something fresh.

4.0 out of 5 stars persevere and you'll be enthralled, 20 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Fire Within (Audio CD)
I am a big Birdy fan, her first cd having being on heavy rotation in my house. I bought her second cd on a whim and on the strength of her superb single 'wings'. initially, I was unsure about how I felt about it. this was clearly a turn towards mid-tempo commercial pop songs. I wasn't quite sure I was happy about it, and for a moment at first, I thought 'wings' was all there was to this album. But boy was I wrong! I persevered and realized that her songs were well crafted pop ditties and in between the obvious efforts for commercial recognition lay beautiful songs, like 'no angel', 'standing in the way of the light' (which could have been sung by a fine frenzy) and 'strange birds'.., all enveloped by her achingly beautiful voice. And as I
continue to listen to this album, I discover new gems. All I can say is don't go in seeking a repeat of birdy's first album, just keep an open mind and get ready to be enthralled. This cd has so far been overlooked, what a pity this is! Birdy is evolving in quite the songwriter, and given the right support, this cd will be the beginning of many other gems!

Placebo manage to put their own personal touch to the various songs they cover, the most successfully with "Bigmouth Strikes Again" "Running Up that Hill", which are superb. Other covers are surprise choices and wouldn't have necessarily been my cup of tea. But overall, this is a consistently good album which shows how versatile Placebo can be. Well worth buying!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lower Body miracle worker, 3 Jun. 2013

I bought this DVD as i wanted to focus on specific areas of the body. And this is what these 3 20 min workouts do. They are quick and efficient and leave you no reason not to do them. Mari Winsor is very good at explaining the exercises and changing the moves at the right time to ensure you keep doing it until the end. Don't get me wrong, this is tough, you feel the burn, but she's good at making you persist. However, it sometimes get difficult squeezing the bum and the stomach whilst doing the exercises at such speed. Need much concentration!

Recovering The Satellites

5.0 out of 5 stars Undiscovered jewel, 31 May 2013
No album had any chance of being appreciated at its proper value after August and Everything After. And Recovering the Satellites was no exception. And what a mistake that is: some of the best work is included in this album: goodnight elisabeth introduced a recurring female presence in adam's song (i wish i was a girl from this desert's life was the continuation of that story); miller's angels; recovering the satellites, and the classic now a long december. This album is a lot rockier, and as such a departure for the Counting Crows but not in a way that alienates the true fan. What is true about this album though is that it matures with age, like good wine, and so you need a multitude of listening to uncover the various layers of these songs and appreciate them. with the 15 years anniversary of this album, it is time to revisit it and appreciate it for what it really is: a jewel

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 31 May 2013
This review is from: Cracked Rear View (Audio CD)
This is music at its best, unpretentious, emotionally-ridden, engaging and melodic. This is what music should be all about. Any listener can identify with Darius' emotion when he sings: as his voice rips through these songs, you know heartbreak, pain and loss have felt the same way to you too. If you haven't had the Hootie experience, you shouldn't wait too long yet, and this album is a good starting point!
