Fast Cooking: Really Exciting Recipes in 20 Minutes
Fast Cooking: Really Exciting Recipes in 20 Minutes
by James Martin
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.59

4.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the 20 minute bit !, 9 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some nice stuff in this book but the 20 minute claim is a bit misleading for many of the recipes because it comes from a cheffy point of view where ingredients are always to hand rather than from a view of food prep being something that most folk have to squeeze into everyday life. For example listing crispy bacon rashers as an ingredient is cheating (unless of course you are rich enough or daft enough to but ready crisped bacon from M&S), because most of us would need to cook the bacon first - that in itself would take 10 minutes leaving you little time to prep or cook the remainder of the dish. Get your head around little things like that and be prepared to ignore the 20 minute bit and the book is worth having - at Amazon prices though - doubt I would say that if I'd paid the cover price.

If you only buy one veggie book, buy this one. I'm not a veggie but like veggie food if it is modern and inspiring. The recipes and the narrative content of this book is both. While I do have Ottolenghi's Plenty & Plenty more, some of those recipes can appear a bit daunting and finnicky, especially if you live somewhere that does not have asian / middle eastern shops to source some of the traditional ingredients, but these ones aren't complex and suggested alternatives & shortcuts make for easy and delicious results.

A much nicer looking peice of technolology than most other routers and this lends it to being acceptable to be seen in any room in the house. However, if like most of the uk you have standard adsl or cable phone line you also need to purchase a modem ( or use the modem part of an additional / spare router) because the airport does not have a built in modem. This obliterates any aesthetic benefits of the sleek design apple is famous for and is short-sighted americanism, believing the rest of the world is like the US with fibre optic lines. For the price or the true cost of adding a modem, apple have succeeded in spoiling an otherwise brilliant product. Signal strength was fantastic but not consistent so I returned the unit but will buy again but not from Amazon because, although cheaper than the highstreet stores, it came packaged in the same box as 5kg of books, the box was trashed by the time it arrived and to make matters worse the courier left it outside my house in sub zero temperatures while I was away for 2 days so I believe it was probably damaged.

3.0 out of 5 stars design flaws raise problems, 9 Mar. 2016

Usually leads that come with telephony products are way too long but the RJ45 lead with this is quite short - too short for where I needed to position the unit in relation to my phone socket. Not a massive issue in itself but the unit is so light that even just the weight of the lead causes it to fall over. It only stands in the vertical plane - it is not designed to lie flat - which causes it to easily fall. I bought it because I was changing from a modem router combi to an apple airport extreme which does not have a built-in modem. Expensive for what it is - very simple and old technology but there seems to be very few modem only products available these days, and none at all in the shops on the highstreet. Lay-flat or grippy / weighted base would improve this product no end.

3.0 out of 5 stars There are better lights but not at this cheap price, 9 Mar. 2016

Quite good light from this and it is bendy so you can position it on a hard surface rather than just on a book. The only thing to be aware of is that the material is relatively heavy rubber feeling stuff, the weight of which causes lightweight or paperback books to flop but for the money it is a decent product.

Bought two of these, one silver and one purple. Mainly for use in car by my daughter who reads a lot. Light is quite good, angle of top can be tilted and is ok for most positions. It is bright enough to read with. Not sure whether batteries will last long as not used much - silver one not used at all yet. Only one problem so far, top half of slider switch keeps falling off. Luckily it has not been lost yet but it will need to be glued on.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good product & not good customer service, 11 Feb. 2016

Rubbish ! I bought two packs of these for two of my daughters. They are tat. A thin strip of magnetic tape is attached to the cap with double sided tape which does not keep the magnet in place so if you attach the pens to say a magnetic whiteboard, the pen drops off leaving only the magnet attached to the whiteboard.

I contacted the company to make them aware that they have a faulty product / batch but they were unhelpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars A PRODUCT TO MAKE ME RETHINK MY VIEWS ON GERMAN ENGINEERING, 17 Jan. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As if buying a VW just before the emissions scandal broke wasn't enough. I researched many many weighing scales before opting for this one. I first seen this scale on the John Lewis website and for some strange reason that made me think it must be decent. It was more expensive than many other scales but I do believe that for many things in life you get what you pay for. However, I bought from Amazon because they were 12 quid cheaper than JL - still pricier than most scales though.

The separate display which could be fixed magnetically to magnetic surfaces was a benefit to me as I get fed up of displays on conventional digital scales being obscured by bowl/jug/plate/pan etc. The fact that it was a German product also gave me some assurance that the premium price should be reflected in the quality of the design, the materials, the functionality and the finish of the product. The Red Dot Award was another indication of this, or so I thought. WRONG ! The finish is quite good but its design flaws outweigh this.

Design flaw number one may be less of an issue in other european countries where nobody uses any units of measure other than grams. Yes, you can use ounces with this device but you cannot easily move between the two, say for example when using 2 recipes where one is in grams and the other in ounces. There is no facility to change the units on the base where you weigh the items, you have to change the entire settings by removing the battery cover on the rear of display and use the 3 fiddly little buttons for "+/-" and "set" to go through the entire set up process for everything again, including date, time, degrees C/F. This is just plain dumb and I cannot believe anybody who has ever needed to use a kitchen scale would build this into their product. Bearing in mind this separate display may also be fixed to your wall or cupboard and its even more of a pain.

The display part itself is neat enough but is not quick to respond, even when used right next to the base. The base is very long for a kitchen scale (about the same length as the old fashioned "balance" scales of yesteryear) and it may be this that causes some inaccurate measurements - for example, placing a ballpoint pen across the scale (ie front to back) gave a reading of 7g but placing the same pen along the length of the scale (ie end to end) gave a reading of zero. Resetting the scale using the tare function to weigh a second item is also fiddly, in that touching the tare marker sometimes works first time and sometimes it takes 3 or 4 attempts.

Finally, the so-called magnetic display is not so magnetic, even before adding the extra weight of 3 x AAA batteries it would not stay put when attached to my fridge, cooker, dishwasher, magnet board or cooker extractor. It just slid down until it either dropped off of came to rest against another object that was attached to the same surface.

The people who assign the Red Dot Awards must have been easily impressed and never used a weighing scale before. Either that or they were very short of candidates that year or it was Friday afternoon or something because with these failings these scales deserve no award - and no space in my kitchen - they're on their way back.

This is probably the best quality hanger for smalls and folds up when not in use. Only one fault - it is intended for indoor use and has alarge open hook which means it blows off the washing line if used outside on a windy day. This has been resolved using an elastic band fixed to the bottom of the hook and looped back over the top when hung on the line.
