2.0 out of 5 stars Brief, 2 Feb. 2012

This race by race summary of Hunt's 1976 season I read in less than 45 minutes and, whilst interesting, is far too brief to do justice to describing the events of that year - Hunt's Mclaren failing scrutineering for dimensional checks in Spain and then fuel irrregularities in Italy, Lauda's horrific crash and his recovery from injury, to name a few. At £1.64 it was worth a punt for something to read on the bus but I can't really recommend buying it. The biography by Gerald Donaldson is a better bet although not yet kindled.

I suppose this could be easy to make at home without buying a kit - plastic drinks bottle, stickers, cork and tyre valve but as a stocking filler or pocket money purchase it isn't bad value for money. I used a foot pump rather than a bicycle pump to avoid getting soaked when the rocket is launched. The rocket just about clears the roof of a two storey house so you do need an open area or a calm day to get the best out of it.

This review is from: LEGO City 3177: Small Car (Toy)
Smart car look-a-like with a surpising amount of pieces in its construction and good value at £3.99. To avoid an insurance claim, remove the car roof before parking in the Apple Tree House garage.

Fantastic kit with clever touches like the mailbox and lawnmower and three variations of houses to build. Very much up to the usual Lego standards of quality with instructions straightforward enough to follow. I bought Lego City small car (3177) too but it is slightly too tall to sit in the garage. Otherwise highly recommended.

Eduard Plastic Kits 8407 Plastic Model Kit Albatros D.V Weekend
Eduard Plastic Kits 8407 Plastic Model Kit Albatros D.V Weekend

5.0 out of 5 stars Eduard Albatros Weekend Edition, 24 Jan. 2012
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
As part of a resurgant youth, I decided to try my hand at building model kits again. I had never built an Eduard kit before, having grown up with Airfix as the predominant kit manufacturer. This kit is exceptionally well detailed with very crisp mouldings particularly around the exposed engine components. Instructions are good although some of the mounting points for components, such as those within the cockpit are a bit vague. The kit comes with decals and painting instructions for one scheme only which I understand is fairly standard for the weekend kits. Although a comlete build in a weekend is a fairly ambitious target, I think that the weekend kits are more accessible and satisfying to build than the more detailed and complex profipacks versions. As a postnote, I should mention that I paid about £15.00 for the kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revell Sopwith Camel, 24 Jan. 2012
= Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
I received this as gift, having stalled (pardon the pun) in the construction of an Eduard 1/48 profipack Sopwith Camel. Fit is fairly good on the model with clear instructions throughout. The parts are quite small and fiddly (1/72 biplanes are tiny!!) but the wing struts are an absolute doddle to secure compared with other kits. Slight complaints are that I had to trim quite a bit of excess flash from some of the mouldings which might be tricky for younger modellers and the decals for the tailplane were too large to fit without trimming. Can't complain at the price though.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read, 23 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As other reviewers have observed, this is an accessible and engaging read. It is a fairly short book so doesn't delve perhaps as deeply as other Senna biographies but still manages to paint the image of the man. In particular, Williams' first chapter description of Sao Paulo in May 1994 is an extremely moving piece of writing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Parker Sonnet Fountain Pen, 23 Jan. 2012
This isn't a review of the supplier but a review of the pen which I received as a gift a few months ago to replace an older Parker that was starting to look a bit tired. I agree with the previous reviewer that the Sonnet is beautifully crafted, well weighted and would look stunning on anyone's desk. However, the desk is where my pen has stayed as it has proven to be one of the worst fountain pens I have ever used, far from the quality of my previous Parker. It takes a frustrating amount of persuasion to get ink flowing and, even once primed, I have found the pen scratchy in use rather than being a smooth writer. It also suffers from an inconsistent ink colour, starting off dark blue and then becoming lighter over a page or so, supplied from both ink cartridge and piston fill. I had thought that mine may be a faulty pen or might need some running in but a quick search on the internet showed that these issues are not uncommon. So, unimpressed, I have returned to using my old trusty battered Parker and need to decide what to do with a pen that is now an expensive ornament. I appreciate my review may be at odds with the other but would recommend people to try before you buy.

Ruark Audio R2i DAB/FM Stereo with iPod Dock: Walnut
Ruark Audio R2i DAB/FM Stereo with iPod Dock: Walnut

5.0 out of 5 stars Vita Audio R2i, 5 Dec. 2011
I deliberated for a long time before deciding to buy this. Having looked at the B&W Zeppelin, Arcam rcube and offerings from Bose, I felt that the Vita R2i gave me the best balance between an Ipod dock and DAB radio functionality, the least compromise in audio quality and the most acceptable aesthetics (influence of other half). The DAB+ tuner is a good performer and has managed to remain stable in my dodgy radio reception area. Using an Ipod as source demonstrates its capabilities more particularly using higher bit rate tracks. Sound quality is excellent with a warmth and depth that belies such a small cabinet and reaches volumes capable of filling reasonable sized rooms. Like other similar products, stereo imagery isn't at the forefront of its delivery due to the spacing between speakers. A 3D sound setting extends the stage, albeit with mixed results on some tracks and I personally think these settings are best left alone. Build quality is very good and the tactile walnut finish has a more lasting feel than, say, the fabric shrouding to the Zeppelin.

Downsides? The credit card sized remote control is a bit low rent compared to the unit itself, although no more so than those from Bose and the rotary menu control isn't as intuitive to use as it could be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vodafone Bluetooth GPS Receiver, 6 Nov. 2011

At £8.95 + P&P I decided it was worth trying to add inexpensive GPS to my non-GPS Blackberry Curve 8520. Connection to the phone was straightforward and satellite signals picked up relatively quickly. Proved useful for navigating walking routes on a recent city break.
