Fear [Blu-ray] [1996]
Fear [Blu-ray] [1996]
Dvd ~ Mark Wahlberg
Price: £7.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 10 May 2013
This review is from: Fear [Blu-ray] [1996] (Blu-ray)
This was a different type of film, hugely gripping.

It was interesting to see the turn around in the character played by Mark Wahlberg. He is brilliant in the role, as are all the cast. It's about a guy who is obsessed with this girl and is extremely unstable and violent, to the point of insanity. The film was thoroughly entertaining right the way through and the ending was fab. Give it a go. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes a good, gripping thriller with an adult theme ans emotional side to it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, 10 May 2013
This review is from: Children Of The Corn [DVD] (DVD)
When I heard that Stephen King had wrote this, I jumped at the opportunity to watch it. Don't expect scary, non of the sort. This movie was far-fetched, ridiculous in places. Granted, its old. The effects are out-dated and a remake has been made now. But that still doesn't cover it. The story is weak and the whole thing is cheap. It's about a couple who stumble across a cult of weird kids who have murdered their parents. Some scenes are enjoyable, but really you just want it to reach the end. The acting was good though, one saving grace. This is not the "horror classic" that everyone is claiming it is, so don't be cheated by that assumption. It is worth a viewing, but it is a silly film that should have never really have been screened.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a watch, 9 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Everybody knows that Stephen King's "IT" novel is a classic, so how on earth could an adaptation do it justice?

It was a risk, but it was worth the risk. This movie is pretty good, while it is drawn out in parts and tended to drag on and on, it was intelligent and enjoyable. It wasn't particularly scary, so if you hear the name "Stephen King" and are expecting the most terrifying experience of your life, this isn't for you. It doesn't have to be scary to be good though. It was funny in parts, with excellent character development and had a great plot. "It" is about an alien entity who disguises itself in whatever form scares or fears the children of Derry the most, a lot of the time it resembles a clown form - to trick the kids.

The reason this movie got four stars is because of the ending, it was weak. It was a big let-down, considering we had to wait ages for it to reach the climax. And what happened? I'm not telling you, you'll have to see it and find out. It was gripping though, with fantastic acting all round. Great stuff, buy it!

Waking the Dead - Series 7 [DVD]
Waking the Dead - Series 7 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Trevor Eve
Price: £11.20

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Series, 8 May 2013
Waking the dead series 7 is not quite as good as series 6, but it receives the same four star rating due to the one awful episode in that series. Having said that the series is still delivering, with solid plots and interesting characters. The acting, production value and plots are as good as ever as we've come to expect from the WTD team. Even though this series is slightly more implausible, the stories do entertain and grip you.

Missing Persons: This is a good start with and interesting plot and great character development. This episode received "Good." Throughout this series there is a sub-plot about Boyd's son, this episode is when we learn his son has re-appeared, setting the stage for the next five episodes.

Sins: This is the best episode in this series, the only one to attain a high rating. "Excellent" demonstrates how good it is, it has a really strong plot and the revilement is really memorable.

Duty And Honour: This episode has taken us from hero to zero, being the worst I this set. The plot was bland, and was very slow and un-engaging. It still got "Average" though, being watchable. It was a bit silly.

Skin: This was a "Good" episode but there are many better WTD's out there. It was intriguing to find out what took place, but nothing spectacular, it was also predictable in parts.

Wounds: Another "Good" one, but still did not give us anything outstanding. It is entertaining, worth a watch, but nothing new. It was implausible again.

Piet'a: All of these last four episodes in series 7 have been hard to follow and attach yourself to, which is why the ratings are not massively high. Piet'a again doesn't deliver to WTD's full, before recognised potential, but it has a great ending that ties up all of the loose ends. The ending was a highlight of this series. WTD makes you believe two different cast people are the same person! It got "Good."

Series 7 is not the best, but it was "Good" overall, with no episodes below "Average." Series 8 is next up and I'm hoping "Waking The Dead" shows us what they are made of and kick some ass with spectacular episodes as we know they are capable of that. BRING IT ON!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful and moving tale...FLAWLESS, 30 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is quite easily one of the best films ever made.

Based on a Stephen King story, it is a moving and extraordinary tale of hope, friendship and survival inside a maximum security prison. Don't be put off by the word "Prison", because that is where the magic comes from. Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins play Red and Andy, the main characters who have a soul for good and always hope that one day they will get out and live their dreams, they form a close bond as the film progresses. This film shows us the brutality that is displayed in prisons and how they are treated, some patients are driven to the extreme point of suicidal behaviour. It is an inspiring and unforgettable film, you will have to discover the amazingness of it for yourself.

The Shawshank Redemption will grip you from start to end, and there is no doubt of that. There will never again be a film as powerful and moving as this, and the ending is spot on - can't help but get a tear. If you don't like this film then I must ask you, "What's wrong with you?"

Just about everybody knows this film. And they should, because its one of those that always pops into your mind now and again.

Tom Hanks plays Forrest to perfection, being very fitting for the character. This film is genuinely funny as well as the story being told really well, with a bit of everything in it. It pulls on your heart strings in a variety of ways. Gump himself made an impact on lots of people, he is inspiring and shows how people with slight disadvantages can always find a place in our hearts.

A really good film, I recommend it to anyone who wants a good laugh and a moving story.

Stand By Me [Blu-ray] [1986] [Region Free]

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic, 28 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a coming of age thriller based on Stephen King's novella, "The Body." All of Stephen King's works are brilliant and many make for excellently crafted adaptations, and so does this. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen, not just out of King's, but in film history.

The story follows four young boys: Chris, Gordy, Teddy and Vern as they set out on an epic journey to find their missing friend. All of these friends come from distinctively backgrounds, and is really interesting to see their relationships develop. Chris is the leader, who comes from a really rough family and fears that he might turn out like that one day. Gordy is the smartest, the main and favourite character who has a soul. Teddy is the funniest and weirdest who you can tell will get into trouble later in life due to his own way about things. And Vern is the nerd, he is sometimes thick but likeable. Throughout the film, we get drawn closer and closer to the characters who have growing relationships as it goes on. As it moves on, the film becomes tenser and tenser with a heavy amount of expectation, which you knew would come to an end somehow - the climax was it. As it is with all films.

It has it all. It is a tale of adventure, friendship, loyalty, fear and hope in a desperate situation. All congested make for one of the best movies of all time.

At the end, when they all separate, you can't help but have a tear. Especially when we learn of an event that happens in bar when they all had gone their own separate ways. It's one of the best thrillers ever...unmissable.

Se7en - Premium Collection Steelbook (Blu-ray + UV Copy) [1995] [Region Free]
Dvd ~ Brad Pitt

5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT GOOD - IT'S OUTSTANDING, 28 April 2013
This is definitely one of the best serial killer films ever made.

It has a superb cast, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt play their roles to perfection. They had a lot on their plate, and both delivered the food in style. The plot for this film couldn't be better, it is so cleverly done and intricately weaved, you get hooked right from the get-go. The production values are also of a high standard, each scene is believable and really well done.

Plot:
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman star in a searing psychological thriller about two detectives on the trail of a vicious serial killer who chooses his victims according to the seven deadly sins.

The pace of the film is good too, it gets more gripping as it progresses and never fails to loosen its grip. However, this film is not for the faint hearted. It has lots of gruesome scenes and strong bloody crime detail. The ending is particularly gut-wrenching, shocking in fact. You were not expecting that at all, a stunning and horribly nasty unforgettable climax. We also get to see the growing development in the relationship between Morgan and Brad, how Brad is more and more irritated as the vicious murders mount, wanting the killer at his heels. We are often astonished at the events that transpire.

In this film you don't really see the killer doing the killing, only the crime scene and what has taken place with the blood and all. This makes the film even more painful to watch. Because trying to imagine the pain and horror the victims were going through is in a way worse than seeing the crime being committed, it leaves you to think of how terrible it must have been for them.

Se7en is obviously a classic for so many reasons, and is in my top ten films of all time. It is absolutely riveting.

3.0 out of 5 stars BOTH ENDS OF THE BOARD, 24 April 2013
This box set contains Pet Sematary 1 and 2, Both are written by Stephen King. While the books are a lot better than these adaptations, this set is worth buying for Pet Sematary 2. 2 was good, this is why the set got 3 stars. However, the first was a real let-down, one of the worst King movies ever - a stupid and cheap movie. Still, worth purchasing for the second instalment.

4.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE GREATEST BOX SETS EVER!, 23 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The X Files is one of the most famous and popular TV shows of all time. It is about two FBI agents, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson,) who investigate paranormal phenomena, one who believes in the existence of extra-terrestrials and one who is a sceptic. Their relationship develops as the series progresses. It shows the journey that Scully undergoes from being sceptic to being a believer, and they have many fascinating and memorable adventures and moments along the way.

This box set contains all nine seasons of the show and the theatrical movie which was the bridging point between seasons 5 and 6, it was shown in cinemas to give audiences a big screen experience. "I want to believe", the second X Files movie, is not included in this release as it was made after this set was released, so buy that separately. All the discs are in each individual season, and do not get scratched like the discs do in the US set, they have their own press-it disc design.

I have watched the first season and I must say I was impressed. I did not like all the episodes which was why this set got 4 stars instead of 5, but there were many memorable investigations. My favourites were Pilot, Conduit, Ice, Young at heart, and Darkness falls. But my very favourites were Squeeze and Tooms, which was effectively a two-part story, like a movie. All of the plots are intricately written and they are all different from one another, making for fresh viewing each time. Not all of the loose ends are tied up though, sometimes questions are unresolved and events unexplainable, however this is done deliberately. This is a very long series, so its worth the price. I got mine at £50 which is a bargain, and I am so pleased with this purchase. The box itself looks amazing and looks great in any collection. The later seasons are supposed to be weaker, say around seasons 7-9. But I will make my own judgements, some people like those episodes.

I think the X-Files is a love or hate show, depending on what you like. I would recommend this box set to anyone who has an interest in supernatural things, unexplainable things or alien type things. For example, shows like "Supernatural" or "Fringe." I would check an episode out first though, or maybe a couple to see if you really like it and want to spend your money on this, but it makes for years of entertainment. Or maybe if you are unsure, jus buy an individual season release, to give you a taste of what you are getting, they should be reasonably cheap nowadays. But, if you are reading this review it is likely you already have seen The X-Files and are making your judgement as you read.

So, if you go off and buy this set and you are a fan of this type of thing, then you will definitely enjoy it. Make your own judgements, but do not waste your money on something that isn't your cup of tea. Some say The X-Files is too far-fetched, but there is no way to prove or disprove some of the plots or resolutions, so you can't say it is. The later seasons are meant to be more ridiculous and far-fetched than the earlier seasons, but again I will make my own opinions on this matter. So far, I personally think The X-Files is a brilliant show with involving plots, great characters and awe-inspiring visual shots. The picture quality is great too, as is the sound. Saying that season 1 was shot back in the 1990's, only the later seasons can be better in that respect. The special features are handy too, making this set even more good than it already is.

THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE about this set now, and I WANT TO BELIEVE you will like this series, which is a worldwide phenomenon. You need to believe me, BELIEVE TO UNDERSTAND. Will you RESIST OR SERVE money?
