2.0 out of 5 stars Endurance test..., 7 Jun 2005
This review is from: Spanglish [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
Maybe my expectations were a little high, from the trailer I had the impression I would see something a little different, a little daring. If you go in hoping for another Punch-Drunk Love, you're in for a bad surpise.
The film starts with the daughter of a Mexican immigrant applying for a college scholarship, the story unfolds in flashback as she is writing an essay about the most influential person in her life. Yes, her mother. OK, so maybe this story would read better than it filmed. The premise that follows is ludicrous, the characters are one dimensional and cliched, and even Adam Sandler has trouble squeezing any humour out of the plodding script. The wonderful Cloris Leachman is shamefully under-used and pretty much everyone else is way over the top. (Tea Leoni is just scary!). It felt like James L. Brooks didn't quite know what he was going for here with the unfortunate consequence that it rubbed off on everybody else - and he sure didn't know how to write these women in a believable way. (Frankly I felt the same way about his awful Helen Hunt character in As Good As It Gets. James' career is littered with single women and solo mums...what's the deal?)
I was expecting a quirky comedy with dramatic threads, what I got was a sentimental made-for-TV drama with a few chuckles. And at over two hours, it is waaay too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful, 6 Jun 2005
This review is from: In The Soup [DVD] (DVD)
Alexandre Rockwell's tale of the beleaguered auteur may have a touch of the autobiographical, but it also has something of the fantastic about it. Shot in grainy black and white on a shoestring it stars the fabulous Steve Buscemi with support from the always great Seymour Cassel and Jennifer Beals (at the time married to Rockwell). Stellar cameos include Jim Jarmusch, Carol Kane, Stanley Tucci and Sam Rockwell (no relation!) to name a few.
Buscemi is a struggling film-maker looking for development money for his 500 page 'art film'. Cassel is the shady businessman and all round fun guy who takes the uber-serious Buscemi under his wing, and Beals is the angelic neighbour who he wants to propel to stardom - not that she cares.
This is a beautiful film full of humour, crazy characters (Will Patton does a scene-stealing turn as Cassel's psychotic brother, Skippy), and it most deservedly won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 1992.

4.0 out of 5 stars Name any three actors..., 6 Jun 2005
The story is set in Argentina where film buff Colin Firth is running an arthouse cinema while keeping a loving eye on his ailing institutionalised Argentinian mother who is slowly losing her marbles. With finances becoming tight he decides to take a lodger into his apartment. Firth is perfectly cast as the hapless English gent losing the plot but doing his best to maintain a stiff upper lip. After several failed interviews, control freak Firth chooses his polar opposite, an amoral and hedonistic American played beautifully by Hart Bochner. But that's really just the beginning.
This movie is a thriller, but it is the relationship between the two men that drives the story. An ensemble cast of neighbours weave in and out telling their stories - notably the wonderful Liz Smith (Royle Family's 'nana') - and the tension is maintained at a steady pace. If you liked 'Fargo' or 'Blood Simple', 'Angel Heart' or even 'Happiness', then give this a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little Big Man, 6 Jun 2005
An all time favourite - it has the flavour of the 70s, a gripping thriller of a plot, uniquely believable and painfully flawed characters, black humour and Robert Blake! What more could you need?
Blake is a highway patrolman, tired of cruising the blacktop on his Electraglide, who dreams of one day becoming a detective. When a for real murder mystery drops into his lap, he gets his chance to prove himself...but it's not quite how he imagined it.
This is CHiPs meets Blood Simple. A gem of a film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best kept secret..., 5 Jun 2005
This movie was such a good find. Unusual and challenging, darkly humourous in places and fearless in approach. I would recommend this film if you liked 'Jesus' Son' or 'Donnie Darko' - they have a similar feel. If you like movies that ask you to think, give this one a try.

I haven't laughed so hard in ages! I certainly wasn't expecting to laugh out loud watching this film, but I did! Puppet kung fu, stupid songs, Ben Affleck abuse - this movie has it all. Brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Four brothers, one bed, one murder?, 27 Sep 2004
This is one crazy story that had me locked in right from the start. What really happened here?
Four brothers are living a squalid existence in the back-blocks of rural New York State. They have lived together, sharing a bed for 60 years. When brother Bill Ward is found dead in suspicious circumstances his younger sibling Delbert admits to a mercy-killing but not long after, he retracts the admission...
Great characters, great story, there's tension, drama, pathos - proof that truth is stranger, way stranger, than fiction.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such good fun!, 2 April 2004
Forget the ludicrous sequel (i.e. expensive American remake) - Robert Rodriguez was better when he didn't have a budget (or a studio) messing with his head.
This movie has great pace, it's clever, original, fun and totally engaging - and all for under US$7000!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of New Zealand's Best, 19 Mar 2004
Geoff Murphy's wonderful film set during New Zealand's very own civil war. Full of history, humour, heart and of course, the meaning of the title, revenge.
The plot weaves around three very different men who are all seeking, and making, their own destinies in a time of war and at the painful birth of a new nation.
Anzac Wallace, Bruno Lawrence, Kelly Johnson, We Kuki Kaa - brilliant performances all round; beautiful scenery, engaging characters - anyone who hasn't seen this movie and has any interest in New Zealand history or film absolutely needs to see it.

5.0 out of 5 stars When A Bad Plan Goes Really Bad..., 19 Mar 2004
This review is from: In Cold Blood [DVD] (DVD)
This film is just plain mesmerising from start to finish. Robert Blake and Scott Wilson both give deeply believable performances as two amateur thieves who end up with a massacre on their hands.
Based on Capote's book about an actual event that stunned the small farming community where it occured, the film is shot in black and white and has a fly-on-the-wall feel about it. Engrossing and brutal, with just enough heart and just enough humour to make it real.
