5.0 out of 5 stars A blistering comeback album, 22 Aug 2012
This review is from: Hot Cakes (Audio CD)
Great hooks, great riffs, great songs = GREAT COMEBACK! The Darkness return with their eagerly anticipated new album Hot Cakes....and what a return. Played it at least 5 times now and I'm loving it. A great mixture of AC/DC style riffing (With A Woman) classic rock sensibilities (Concrete,Every Inch Of You) and fun filled anthems (Everybody Have a Good Time, Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now) Their cover of Street Spirit by Radiohead is nothing less than brilliant! If you have ever loved what the Darkness are about this album won't disappoint, essential listening. Give me a D give me an 'Arkness!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Classic!, 21 Jun 2011
This review is from: Pressure and Time (Audio CD)
Hotly in line for my album of year this is a bona fide classic!

Rival Sons have been on my radar for sometime having listened to a lot of their earlier stuff on myspace and been mightly impressed. If you like classic 70's era rock ie Zeppelin, Free, Humble Pie, Yardbirds then you'e in for a real treat.

The new album is a revalation from start to finish. There are just too many highlights throughout but my personal faves are the title track Pressure and Time, the Zepplenesque Gypsy Heart and Burn Down Los Angles which has a White Stripes kinda garage feel to it. The production is also superb, sounds like it was all done on analogue tape and has that spine tingling vinyl groove, missing from most modern recordings. Can't wait to catch them live in July at the Borderline

Go out and buy it now you won't be dissapointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible panned and scanned print avoid, 13 May 2010
This review is from: Sunday In The Country [DVD] (DVD)
This maybe a hard to get movie and I was looking forward to seeing it as it has been on my wish list of rare movies for some time.
Well all I can say is what a total dissapointment! The print is atrocious, washed out and blurry, it looks like the source material was a ropey vhs copy. It is also panned and scanned ,squashed into 4.3 format. If this is what to expect from future Excalibur releases ie A Town Called Hell then I will be avoiding anything they put out like the plague.

4.0 out of 5 stars loved the new album, 2 Oct 2008

On first listen I was unsure but having now lived with the album for nearly a week it has really grown on me. The opening track is definately one of the best things Jackson has written, love the melody and the chorus is intantly memorable. Each track reveals different aspects of his song writing, political and personal. Another stand-out is Drums Of War with it's political overtones and haunting lyrics. Not his best but definatley enjoyable and certainly much better than his last outing.
