The Burning (Coroner Jenny Cooper Series)
The Burning (Coroner Jenny Cooper Series)
by M. R. Hall
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 11.89

5.0 out of 5 stars Very gripping, 18 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book was up to M R Hall's usual standard, and was intensely gripping. The plot was well planned, with plenty of red herrings, and the ending was (as usual) very dramatic. If there was a fault with the book, it was that one of the final twists in the ending was a little hard to believe (it didn't quite ring true).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 3 Feb 2014

Contains everything I needed. This book is blunt, honest, and really helpful. I've looked at a few similar works, and frankly this is the best I've seen

The Road to Serfdom (Routledge Classics)
The Road to Serfdom (Routledge Classics)
by F.A. Hayek
Edition: Paperback
Price: 14.69

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, 28 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is now rather dated, but still provides a valuable insight into the thought processes during the second world war regarding the need to re-assess the world's economic structure after 1945. I found it helpful but much more limited than Hayek's later work (The Constitution of Liberty).

The Constitution of Liberty (Routledge Classics)
The Constitution of Liberty (Routledge Classics)

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and thoughtful, 28 Mar 2013

Hayek presents his arguments very thoroughly, but also demonstrates considerable insight into the issues covered. This book provides valuable background to the entire argument about liberty, the free market and capitalism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful, 25 Feb 2013

I enjoyed this work and found a great deal of quotable material in it. The main criticism would be that the authors do not volunteer much information on the fundamental criticisms of their own view: they do not set out the case for and against the underlying issue of ownership, but simply assume that this is a given.

The case as set out in the original 'Spirit Level' is initially convincing, but (as pointed out by this book) some of the statistics are open to challenge. The criticism, from my point of view as an economist and philosopher, is that the entire argument is founded on outcomes. I consider that the essence of human life is to flourish by having autonomy, and by our all being different rather than equal. We all want different things, and have different levels of commitment and effort; we therefore recognise the need to accept different outcomes so long as there is a reasonable safety level for the poor and the needy. As is commonly observed, life is a journey not a destination, and to simplify it into measurable statistics is to completely miss the essence.

This review is from: Red Bones (Shetland) (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book. Well plotted, and excellent characterisation. It was a page-turner, and has made me want to read further books by Ann Cleeves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real page-turner, 25 Feb 2013

This was an excellent read, let down only by the overall plot which seemed a little contrived (in the sense of it being rather unlikely).

4.0 out of 5 stars It does work, 12 Jan 2013

This repeater does help to extend the range of a wifi signal, but perhaps not by as much as one might wish. But given its small cost, it is good value for what it does.
