4.0 out of 5 stars Compelling but a bit hard to swallow, 7 July 2014
This review is from: Stranger By the Lake (Blu-ray)
This is an interesting, atmospheric film with precise storytelling and good performances. The central character's motivations are kept a bit of a secret. Of course love / lust is a factor but is that really enough to explain what he does? I found his behaviour hard to accept and thought the director needed to do more to convince me this could happen.

Worth seeing and reflecting upon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Come on Amazon do the right thing!, 12 Jun 2014
I love this campaign. Great idea. It's appalling that a company as rich and successful as Amazon can't pay a decent wage to the very people who ensure it's success. Come on Amazon, show us you can be ethical, and watch all the free positive publicity push up your profits even higher.

4.0 out of 5 stars Teenage kicks, 25 May 2014
This review is from: Good Vibrations (Blu-ray)
An enjoyable, lively and atmospheric film about the music scene in Belfast during the troubles. Powerful archive footage is successfully integrated without interrupting the flow of the drama. The film shows what joy music can give in difficult times, and how the forces that would like to divide us know this, and act accordingly. It also gives a good sense of how naive, crazy and reckless you need to be sometimes in order to get creative dreams of the ground.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight Ray, 25 May 2014
This review is from: The Holy Man (Blu-ray)
This film has some charm and Ray probably had good reasons for wanting to lampoon the gullibility of people with regard to religious gurus, but this short film (about 60 mins) is pretty average in comparison to the great director's masterpieces such as The Big City and The Music Room. It is missing the humanity and emotional power of those films. The Blu ray looks great though, and if you love Ray, you'll probably want to see this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dry Summer is a masterpiece, 19 April 2014
Wow. Just watched 'Dry Summer' and it blew me away! It's quite a simple tale but has an amazing intensity. The super charged performances have a magnetic pull and ferocious energy. The camera work is brilliant, and there are some very inventive shots at particularly explosive moments. I definitely want to see more films by this director. I watched the Masters of Cinema blu ray of this film and the picture quality is superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars The only way to see inside, 15 April 2014
This review is from: Cave of Forgotten Dreams (Blu-ray)
This is worth watching in order to see the extraordinary prehistoric paintings of the Chauvet caves (closed to the public) which are tens of thousands of years old. The documentary itself is interesting, but not one of Herzog's greatest. I watched the film in 2D, which is a shame as I imagine the shape of the cave would work well in 3D.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant doomed French gangster classic, 6 April 2014
This review is from: Classe Tous Risques (Blu-ray)
This BFI Blu Ray has fantastic picture quality and really showcases the excellent photography. The film is very atmospheric and mixes cold eyed realism with tragedy, and romanticism. Lino Ventura gives a magnificent performance and Jean-Paul Belmondo is a lot less annoying than in Breathless. This film deserves to be better known.
