5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, as usual, 30 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hobsbawm's take on the 20th century is both thorough and engaging. The breadth of knowledge he draws on is vast, and he covers subjects not usually addressed in large-scale histories. If I want to understand the broad trends that coalesced around historical events, I can trust that I can open up Hobsbawm's books and I will get what I need.

Inventing Western Civilization (Cornerstone Books)
Inventing Western Civilization (Cornerstone Books)
by Thomas C. Patterson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Short, easy introduction to the idea of Civilization, 30 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The author (eminent Archaeologist Thomas Patterson) takes the reader through the origins of the idea of civilization, as a distinguishing, hierarchical concept, as it emerged in the late Renaissance in Europe. It's well cited, but written very simply and in a straightforward fashion. It moves effortlessly between the historical past and the political present, showing how the idea of civilization has come be used in debates about globalization, economic policy, and cultural values.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, 24 Aug. 2013

I cannot believe how good these sound. I burn through earbuds, and was sick of buying crappy ones just because I didn't want to spend good money on something I would destroy. Now, I don't care! These are cheap, and they sound better than some very expensive buds I've owned over the years.

An amazing hip-hop record, full of humor, pathos, and thoughtfulness. It's also a light-year ahead of his first mixtape, earl. It's well worth your time.

Cultivating Gentlemen: Meaning of Country Life Among the Boston Elite, 1785-1860
by Tp Thornton
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £25.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, smart book on early American tensions between urban and rural life, 12 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A really clever study of how merchant elites in Boston at the end of the 18th century began to invest in the trappings of country life as a way of deflecting criticism of their wealth and social standing. The book discusses the earliest formations of agricultural societies in Massachusetts and how class, science, and the symbols of farming came together in them.

Letters From Abu Ghraib
Letters From Abu Ghraib
by Joshua Casteel
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A powerful, thoughtful, and deeply spiritual book, 14 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A collection of letters written by Joshua Casteel as he began his tour in Iraq, as an interrogator at Abu Ghraib prison, after the scandal about prisoner abuse.

Casteel's thoughtful discussions of military life and work, as well as his deeply religious convictions eventually came to a head in his decision to apply for conscientious objector status.

The book combines thoughtful religious meditations with powerful insights into army life and psychology

4.0 out of 5 stars Raw, tight, and hilarious, 21 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Future of the Left continue to melt faces with this record. It starts with one of their strongest songs "Sheena is a T-shirt Salesmen", and keeps on destroying from there. Funny without being silly, vicious without being pretentious--this a great record.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, complex music, 21 Aug. 2012

This isn't an easy album, but it rewards repeated listens, and its honesty and musical complexity is really gripping. I can't say it's the best album I've ever heard or anything, but it's really good.
