5.0 out of 5 stars For non-fundamentalists only, 11 July 2014
This review is from: Noah [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This film will not appeal to any fundamentalist: religious or atheist. For the religious any deviation from the biblical text is aoutomatically heresy (and there is quite a lot of deviation); for the atheist any notion of devine intervention is simply ludicrous.
Not falling into either camp I found the film a fascinating and very imaginative re-telling of a generic "story".

Capital in the Twenty-First Century

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding at many levels, 9 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a wide-ranging book. One may disagree with its proposition that inequality is growing at an alarming rate. And even if one accepts that proposition one may regard Piketty's solutions as utopian. However, his analysis of inequality up to 1914 is an education in itself. Likewise his reminder of the impact of Thatcher and Reagan on tax policies. Added to that his analysis of the Euro is balanced and insightfuil.
This book should be required reading for all 1st year university students. Regardless of discipline.

5.0 out of 5 stars A portrait of India, 29 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a highly entertaining but disturbing portrait of India in all of its complexity and vastness, its corruption and spirituality, its awfulness and life-enhancing vigour. Each and every one of the sections telling the stories of the assasins is remarkable. The writing is unflaggingly excellent. Simply brilliant.

The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike)
The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike)
by Robert Galbraith
Edition: Paperback
Price: 3.85

3.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read on a plane, 27 Feb 2014
This is for the most part well-written pulp fiction. However, the ending relies on one or two deductions by the sleuth that verge on the ridiculous. But if you have nothing better to do, it does move along at a rapid pace and for the most part is good entertainment.

Margaret Thatcher: The Authorized Biography, Volume One: Not For Turning (Vol 1)
Margaret Thatcher: The Authorized Biography, Volume One: Not For Turning (Vol 1)
by Charles Moore
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 20.40

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful, 23 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Charles Moore maintains his distance throughout. Indeed in the early life sections there is a wry smile lurking there. His ability to recreate her era is masterful.
For the record I was not one of her supporters - but perhaps now I am inclined to revisit my long -held opinions. That is a mark of a great book.

It is simply very interesting to experience the - from a Brit perspective - sheer oddness of the selection of (excellent) tracks for this US album.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick-buck production, 25 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Class of '92 [DVD] (DVD)
All neutrals are fans of these players and their triumph in Europe. They reestablished English fotball after the miserable years post-Heysel and they did so with stylish attacking fotball. Most of the DVD features recent interviews with the players but little in the way of analysis of how so much home grown talent was developed at MU then and only then. The opening passages hint at the context but it goes no deeper than that. They were stunning and they deserve a much better treatment than this quick-buck production.

5.0 out of 5 stars The second richest guy in the States and still going strong, 15 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Without having inherited very much in the way of wealth Warren Buffett employed an approach to investment that resulted in his becoming one of the world's richest men. This is quite a subject for a biography and this book tackles it well. At all times the book provides the context so that we are also provided with a history of post-war developments in the financial industry. Its view of Buffett is generally favorable but his inconsistencies and his quirks as well as his limitations are well documented. It is never tedious and it is always well-written. Not a book for those seeking a speedy way to a fortune because as the book makes clear the circumstances that enabled Buffett to make his fortune are no longer there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading, 28 Dec 2012
One defect of the Western media highlighted by this book is its lack of sustained focus on developments in Russia particularly since the turn of the millennium. Unlike the USA, there are simply not enough serious journalists posted to Russia. This has meant that coverage of developments in Russia has been haphazard and analysis superficial. This well-written and well-documented book is an important antidote to the lazy and hazy notions of Russia as a putative emerging democracy. On the contrary: it is a tyranny run by gangsters.
