5.0 out of 5 stars It’s about falling in love with a maniac which has its thrills, 11 Aug. 2015
This review is from: Automatic (Audio CD)
The C.D. cover depicts a holiday vibe with the four members (Rob Damiani – Vocals. Matt Donnelly – Drums. Simon Delaney – Guitar. Tom Doyle – Bass.) The title – Automatic glows a neon pink in the centre. The lads came across the garden with a pool while in America and asked the owner if they could use it as a photo shoot. The package comes in a gatefold sleeve with both holiday vibe and live pictures along with a glossy booklet containing credits, photos and lyrics. My only complaint being that they are rather an eye straining and small to read.

This is the second main album from Don Broco who now sell out venues in next to no time. They are about to play their 5th time at Leeds/Reading festival and hail from Bedford with Esquires being their home music venue.

SUPERLOVE is the first album track but one of the Later songs written, it was quick to write but that was after getting nowhere with it at first while sat out in the garden on a hot day and decided they might as well be sitting out in Spain – so off they went.
It’s about falling in love with a maniac which has its thrills! It has an uplifting and bouncing vibe, verging from rocking out to a catchy pop based sound when the vocals reach higher levels – well you wouldn’t expect growling vocals with Don Broco.
With its energetic opening and after a lot of thought it was decided to be included first on the track listing, along with the next single -

The title track AUTOMATIC is next, giving us the epics first and was quickly written after their trip from Spain, feeling refreshed (and burnt) the track has ended up well, its short and gloriously poppy with sing along ooooooh’s in with the vocal soundscape.
About not always having to think things through, why complicate things if you could just go in to an automatic mode.

WHAT YOU DO TO ME has an acoustic opening. The lyrics are about Checking up on who you are seeing, their messages coming through and wanting none of their games, which makes me think they are seeing life through Facebook social media. The chorus has quite a blast after the vocally led verses.

FIRE is quite an anthem of a tune, as with the previous track was previewed on line before the album was released and one they open live with, its heavier, rockier, and more of an in your face blast. The basis of the song was written minus a chorus to begin with then like a Frankenstein monster was stitched on with an unused previous unreleased idea which came in to being at a previous four in the morning wind up of a new years eve party at their producers, so a bit like stealing a familiar song although one they had in fact previously written themselves and when put together there is a well-tailored tune. Laid back guitars lead well in to the ‘Fire Fire Fire’ of the chorus.

NERVE has a relaxing opening that go so well with those slo mo effective videos about going back to a relationship that you know has ended, when perhaps you know you shouldn’t. Its another song that captures an epic feel with drums recorded at the huge Hampstead Air studios in London coming in well on this track.

We are on a date now with LET YOU GET AWAY about the singer’s personal worst ever date and exercised out as a song, quite a modern slant with the girl of the piece checking her phone all the way through the experience and three texts in a row and if you turn up the sound at the end, her name is whispered out.

I GOT SICK Yup it’s a love song, the sickness is the proverbial love bug about possessively wanting to know what your other half is doing. Not sounding how it first started during the writing process, beginning with the guitarist’s killer riff and quickly jamming around until admittedly the last minute before they were in the studio until they got the desired vibe to the song. It’s short n sweet but succeeds in saying it all in the time given.

KEEP ON PUSHING is what you need to do to change the person you are with to how you want them, based on an early idea for album inclusion it has a mild soothing opening and has a lot of vocals with just a few guitar strut bursts before the filling riffs. I would say more of an album track to demonstrate the different styles in their songs more than an all-out rock out track for a live set.

TOUGH ON YOU about their previous bassist leaving, with the lyrics wondering if after all things gone through would you walk away again, see what you think when reading the lyrics. They are still friends but wondered how he feels now – so quite a personal song for the band.

What a great tune to the last track FURTHER. It was always going to be the final track on the album (unless you include the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition) after writing, it was clear that it didn’t need much adding or taking away without spoiling a perfectly good track as it stood. Not played live (yet) this track is being saved for the live tour in December.

There are also some Deluxe version bonus tracks which are reviewed on the Bedford Alternative Music website.

Long awaited after the success of their Priorities first album Automatic is a strong chart contender, this album will hold many good memories for years to come, especially through being at their sell out streamer popping champagne soaked midnight Bedford launch of August 2015.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice material and choice of colours, 23 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Nice material and choice of colours, end tassles cut thick and not anoyingly long so they do not keep getting caught in coat zips. The actual size of the scarf which I do not think was mentioned is 23cm x140cm which was just the right size I wanted, you can wear the scarf round the neck crossing over left and right side of your body without the need of wrapping it round your neck several times making it a better size to store in your coat pocket when not in use.

5.0 out of 5 stars A read that thakes you on a journey through Mind and Space, 2 Aug. 2014
I once met the author in my home town and remembering him telling me about the search for Prince Charles's dog, the memory must have stayed with me as several years later I came across a local music venue holding a gig to promote Dr. Clive Travis's book which was I have to say upon purchasing was a remarkably interesting read, taking the reader on a travelogue to Africa and all around England in addition to other countries and a trip through the mind also. It's a journey that takes you through what went on during the author's state of mind, how he thought, the way he was treated by the medical profession which hopefully has got better at understanding when it comes to prescribing for patients. You never quite know just what's round the corner on his journey, but left hoping its good and for the best four our journeyman who shares his experiences with interest, verisimilitude and sometimes humorous anecdotes, occurrences and the characters met along the way. I can recommend the book as being of interest to people in practice and learning of mind conditions in addition to anyone wanting a read that takes you on both a physical and mental journey.
There is nothing new about good well written story's to tell but the way this journey is told certainly holds up as a new way of thinking and true life story telling. Was Prince Charles reunited with his missing dog? Join the search and learn the truth... (M)Truth
