2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 10 Nov 2013

I bought this and really looked forward to it after thoroughly enjoying Carter. But it lacks both the verve and the plotting of the previous book, though you can see its trying to be in the same territory. I don't know whether it was meant to be about Chaplin - in which case I don't understand the point of the storylines about the war, or was it about the war - in which case why so much about chaplin? It could be just me, but I do read a lot and usually "get" books - but I couldn't get this one

Written very much in an updated Hammett style, this was a really good read, apart from the slightly silly 70s ending

I got 4 days use out of this before it exploded (well, popped, I guess). I'm not confident enough in getting a refund to spend more money on sending it back

I, like some of the other reviewers, have no idea what the author was trying to do with this book. I thought I'd give it a go after reading Corpsing, which I enjoyed, but whatever he was trying to do with this, I don't think it worked. Its not funny, its not scary, its not engaging, its not a story.

A cross between Man and Status Quo - which may do them a bit of a disservice, but you'll see what I mean when you listen. Great driving music, with lots going on in the soloing and so on

needs a few listens to take you beyond the initial joy of the noise (which is great, but obviously repetitive - that's the point) to what's in the songs. I've enjoyed it more each time I listen.

3.0 out of 5 stars Drums to the fore, 26 May 2013

I came across this band through the Guy Evans Van der Graaf Generator connection and very much liked the This Too Shall Pass album.

However, whilst this live album captures the interaction with the audience well, the subleties of the sound are lost, and in particular the drums (Guy Evans) are way too loud, dominating the sound. I wonder if their star drummer did the mixing?

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised, 29 Mar 2013

I bought this out of curiosity, having not listened to the Stranglers since The Raven. I wasn't at all sure what to expect, having read reviews describing the album as very varied. But its all recognisably the Stranglers - variations within a clear theme, I'd say. Rockier than I expected, quite heavy in place, and tunes that stick in your mind as much as the early stuff. Glad I bought it

2.0 out of 5 stars well written but uninteresting, 4 Mar 2007
Al the things the previous reviewer said are true, but unfortunately this book, for all that it's very well written, doesn't half take some getting through. There is very little to make you keep turning the pages - little happens and its hard to care about the characters.
