2.0 out of 5 stars No evidence of the Francis flair to me, 7 May 2014

I wonder if I'm reading a different book to the rest of the reviewers, or maybe seeing dck Francis books through rose tinted spectacles. this is the first I've read for a long time, but I used to love his books, and am really disappoitned by how leaden this is - the complete opposite of the Francis flair. It seems wooden, with stilted dialongue and going on and on about Tom's history, rather than developing the plot. I'm 20% of the way in and nothing has happened yet! I'll stick with it because of all the other positive reviews, but with low expectations

5.0 out of 5 stars Just the job, 30 Mar 2014

I was looking for a better way to connect the music player on my phone to my hifi than using a lead from the headphones socket, which tends to give a quiet and rather muddy sound - something to do with the output needed to drive earphones being less than the hifi amp needs, I guess.(I'm sure someone will correct if that's wrong!). This does the job perfectly - it gives much better sound, maybe not quite CD quality, even with 320 sound quality, but pretty close. The receiver came on time, was surprisingly small, and does what I bought it for - a splendid bit of kit at a bargain price! My only minor grumbles would be that the leads that come with are are low quality, and the battery life seems to be only three or four hours (though I think they tell you that). But for a tenner, this is fantastic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad at all, 18 Mar 2014

it doesn't really read like Chandler, but no other Chandler tribute does either. But apart from being a little slow it was better than I expected

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty poor, 12 Mar 2014

I was disappointed with this book. it starts well, as the writing is easy and conversational. But nothing much happens, for a supposed mystery thriller and the jokey style became annoying rather than funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works really well, 4 Feb 2014

I didn't know what to expect from this and was prepared for something "difficult". But in fact its surprisingly accessible and full of songs - with a couple of semi-ambient pieces. The combination of guitars works really well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to summarise, 1 Feb 2014

I enjoyed this - hence the rating - but my view of it changed through the book. the first half is pretty standard coming of age stuff, the next bit felt a real change of direction and the end is excellent and thought provoking, so that the fairly light hearted first half is a bit misleading. More of a book than it first seems.

3.0 out of 5 stars couldn't get it, 7 Jan 2014

I like Andrew Crumey's books, but got to the end of this one without being able to get what it was about. I've enjoyed being baffled and made to think by his previous books but this one didn't work for me

1.0 out of 5 stars rubbish, 7 Jan 2014

Didn't arrive till the last day of the delivery period. They sent me the wrong size, too big and with a hole for a camera. I cut a sheet down to size (I'm not messing about returning £1 worth of stuff as the postage will be more than that) and couldn't apply it without loads of bubbles that wouldn't be smoothed out. Oh well, you get what you pay for I guess.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 10 Nov 2013

I bought this and really looked forward to it after thoroughly enjoying Carter. But it lacks both the verve and the plotting of the previous book, though you can see its trying to be in the same territory. I don't know whether it was meant to be about Chaplin - in which case I don't understand the point of the storylines about the war, or was it about the war - in which case why so much about chaplin? It could be just me, but I do read a lot and usually "get" books - but I couldn't get this one

Written very much in an updated Hammett style, this was a really good read, apart from the slightly silly 70s ending
