5.0 out of 5 stars Cool Thriller in Post-USSR - Plain & Simple, 13 Jun. 2010
This review is from: Transsiberian [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
Enjoyable, straight forward thriller, based on a very realistic background of post-soviet criminal networks. Its not a masterpiece, but a very well made and interesting film with good convincing acting performance. Ben Kingsley is great. Portrayal of Post-USSR Russia very realistic and believeable. Fully recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Anti-dote to "Inglorious Basterds", 23 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Valkyrie [DVD] (DVD)
To start, I feel that this film has been extremely well made, with excellent attention to detail and very fine acting. Very realistic and as close to the true story as is possible in a movie which is to appeal to the general public.

There are a few messages in this film. Of how stereotypes are abused, how people used to think mid 20th century, how dictatorships work, and how individuals can still make a difference - and how they have to pay for it.

Life in Hitler Germany was no joke. Every person was under the control of the Nazi state - by penalty of death. The Nazis, born from the economic fallout of the great depression and the infamous Versailles Treaty were a minority which managed to get to control the state and oblitterate any opposition. Their aim was to "equalise" Germany with the powers of the day - Great Britain mainly. Hence conquest for new territory, "colonies" in Eastern Europe. No one was allowed to interfere with this aim. National Socialism was to create a new "living space" for the germans who had suffered so badly from war, peace and capitalist crisis. Stalin's USSR was their epitomy of evil - the destroyer of culture and bourgeois values in the 1930s - in conjunction with the invisible control by Jews in High Finance who cared not about Nation States. A NAZI felt himself a FREEDOM FIGHTER for his people and country. This fed through to almost every person, might they have been critical of Nazis before or not. Every aspect of life in Nazi Germany from 1933-1945 was pervaded by these doctrines. This is the mindframe.

This explains why the german military supported the Nazis. This explains why it was so difficult for anyone to oppose the system. And it took time for some people in the know to realise that their own state was doing evil things - this was a long process. For many, extreme circumstances justified extreme measures. Anyone who did not pull on the same rope was identified as a traitor and killed. No chance for any opposition. Even listening to the BBC radio was punishable by death!!! And political spies and denunciants were everywhere - (you might have seen how the governments get people to inform on those who abuse social services or avoid tax....) this is a well proven system used by tyrannical governments. Those were the times and ways of thinking.

A system that in typical german thoroughness was so well constructed, that no simple "coup d'etat" could have got rid of it. The soldiers where sworn-in to follow Hitler. In those days that meant what it said. Himmler's SS was a state in the state (ie.the SS made sure the government did what the NAZIS wanted)). No-one could hope to kill Hitler and simply take over the government. That was impossible. The system would not have blinked an eyelid, any open opposition would have been squashed like flies. And even if they would have had popular support, the SS would have exterminated them. In the film you can follow exactly this - only a very thourough plan to capture all vital organs of government and neutralise the SS (commanded by Himmler) would have had a chance of success - nothing else. Stauffenberg's, Dr.Goerdeler's (the envisaged new Chancellor) and his group's (the envisaged new government) plan was real genius and an effort worthy of the NOBEL PEACE prize - and probably would have worked - had Hitler actually been killed. Hitler was saved by circumstances, the bomb was ineffective in a "light build" outdoor house - instead of a bunker which was his usual meeting place. Indeed, this prolonged the war by 10 bloody months.

The Members of the STAUFFENBERG Group paid for it with their lives. Pityless, merciless they were butchered - like any "Traitor and Enemy of the State" at the time. I think 43 men in total. No-one could help them. They were real heroes - to do what their conscience (that they rescued from better times before the NAZIS) told them - knowing that they would most likely die for it. It took Hollywood 64 years to remember them.

Its easy nowadays wiping their efforts off as "well, so bloody well they should have done". No, its not that simple. If you live in such times - this was far from simple. You had to be an absolutely exceptionally principled person to have the strenght and mental ability to do this. In Dictatorships (past & future....) there are not many people like that. We better pray that there will always be enough people like them.............. going by modern societies I m not so sure.......

It is a truth that many germans did not like Hitler. Most were horrified by his war actions, certainly when he started the invasion of the USSR. After "german" lands had been re-conquered (see Versailles Treaty). Most did not understand what was going on, they were subject to brain-washing with NEW MEDIA like RADIO, CINEMA, and state NEWSPAPERS. And you had to fear for your life even thinking critical. Tens of Thousands of germans dissappeared in Concentration Camps or were executed for treason - there was no more opposition. The system copied STALIN's USSR in wiping out those posing a threat to the new State's power. Totalitarianism was ruling half the world.

Not that western powers were so humane either. Colonialism was alive and well. Britain ruled 25% of the worlds population. The methods were nicer - but black, arab, indian and asian people were "not the same". They were also seen as inferior - and deserved to be taught that western culture was what they should comply with and aspire to - make not mistakes.

Which brings me to Stereotypes. This film is realistic without stereotypes. It is fair and it was long overdue. Thank you Bryan Singer - you deserve a Medal for contributing to human development.

Unlike "Inglorious Basterds". A Hate-film of malicious negligence of historical and human truths. There were some brave jewish soldiers that fought against the NAZIS, but to portrait them like that is untruthful and distorted. And why, one has to ask oneself, why is such a film made now? Have we not seen dozens of NAZI-killing films repeated endlessly over and over again? Did we need one more? What would killing Hitler in Paris have achieved? Maybe the SS would have done the same to Paris as they did to Warsaw? Totally idiotic. Would a more intelligent approach to the subject matter not be more impressive? The film has little substance and lots of senseless action. You could be forgiven for thinking that the Weinstein Company intended this as some sort of anti-german propaganda film and therefore it should be assigned to "file 13". "TOTAL TRASH".

Maybe Tarantino will make his next film about Palastinians blowing themselves up in Israel taking 100 Israelis with them each time and so liberating the country they were deprived of inhumanely by a continued act of international injustice. I suppose not.

In that way we have the two extreme examples of popular education at work here. "Valkyrie" helps you understand history. It will be a classic in time, covering an essential part of human history. "Inglorious Basterds" does nothing of these sorts. It peopagates feelings of hatred, division and prejudice. This is a poison for peaceful life on this planet. Whats the point of phantastic action if the contents is rubbish?

You have the choice. I know what I prefer. Thank you Bryan - for not leaving us alone with the Tarantino's and Weinstein's of this world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too much action and too little brains, 18 Mar. 2009
Was disappointed with the film - had hoped it would be a nice story about friendship and some experiences that create a peaceful and enjoyable childrens movie. Instead it turned out to be half a war film, very hectic and with lots of noise and over-the-top action. I found myself getting tired of trying to follow the story, which was very basic: Boy finds egg which turns out to be a Loch Ness dinosaur - bad people want to kill it over and over again but makes a last second miraculous escape. Off course. One more... Cant help thinking that what it lacks in substance is replaced by noisy action.
