4.0 out of 5 stars A gripping story, well written and entertaining, 17 April 2015
This review is from: Deep Shell (Kindle Edition)
This is a great book: well written, well paced and surprisingly engaging with surprising twists - I want to read the sequel!

It is also quite short, and I am not sure I agree with the 12-18 age rating - to me, it's definitely a 15+ that would get 4.5 stars from me if that was possible :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great battery supplement, works very well, 28 Dec. 2014

Fantastic little device, very easy to use and smart looking. I find the button needed to activate a little hard to find without looking, but that is a minor niggle. Gets me nearly 2 full iPhone 5S charges.

1.0 out of 5 stars Loud humming; unusable, 5 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I wanted to use this to connect an iPad to a pair of powered speakers. As soon as the cable is plugged in, the speakers hum loudly - even though nothing is connected to the other end and the cable is not close to anything that could generate interference.

Get yourself a higher quality cable; this one had to go in the bin :(

The Hydrogen Sonata (A Culture Novel)
The Hydrogen Sonata (A Culture Novel)

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable, if somewhat "routine", 9 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love the Culture universe and series, and this book is a worthy addition to it. However, I can't shake the feeling that the author either isn't trying very hard, or has run out of new things to say about the Culture. I found it much more predictable than any other Culture novel.

If you haven't yet read any of the Culture novels, I think this is a good one to start with as it has it all and there is little assumption that the reader knows anything up front; it is all explained as if it's a stand-alone book. Don't be put off by the fact that the first page is hard to get through; it gets easier later on, and Banks' style is a delight :)

Several times, the characters discuss whether there is any Meaning to it all, and I get the sense that Mr Banks himself isn't quite sure there is meaning in more Culture books; it in fact almost feels like a parody of itself in some ways.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant hardcore scifi, 4 Sept. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Emergence (Kindle Edition)
There is both action, humour, intrigue, cool technology, aliens, space battles and a bit of romance in this sprawling, hardcore sci-fi novel that combines many of the best ideas from such diverse sources as Iain Bank's Culture, The Truman Show and Men in Black, while at the same time adding something distinctly Ben-Nathan to the picture.

The author has really pulled out all the stops in this novel, keeping the story both engaging, surprising and interesting all the way through, without taking itself too seriously. It brings all of the multiple threads to a very satisfying conclusion while at the same time also sets the stage for a follow-up volume. A volume I can't wait to read!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreliable, corrupts files, 15 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this to read large picture files from my camera's SDHC, and have been disappointed. When reading the pictures on my Macbook Pro laptop, the image files are subtly corrupted - another card reader can read the files accurately.

If you do use this, make sure you check the checksum of the files you retrieve - better yet, buy a better quality reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!, 22 Oct. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Xkcd: Volume 0 (Paperback)
This book is simply a gem of excellently conceived, interesting, funny and sometimes quite profound humour. It sometimes needs a bit of insider knowledge - of computers or maths - to get the punchline, but that just makes it even better.

Such simple lines, such profound humour. Get it, get it! :-)

2.0 out of 5 stars It's rubbish!, 22 Oct. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had looked forward to watching this movie for a long time. When the time finally came to watch it, it turned out to be... terrible. It's tediously slow, poorly acted, and mainly just boring with a few really gross scenes thrown in - more disgusting than horror, though. The best part is when a bunch of cats go berserk - it made me laugh out loud because the effects were so poorly done.

Not recommended. I just can't believe the number of rave reviews of this one!

Don't Just Roll the Dice - A Usefully Short Guide to Software Pricing
Don't Just Roll the Dice - A Usefully Short Guide to Software Pricing
by Neil Davidson
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Succinct, insightful and interesting, 1 Nov. 2009
Neil manages to capture all of the essentials in a book that is no longer than it needs to be - spend just an hour or two reading this book, and you will have all of the basics covered. For example, there is a great section on pitfalls to avoid, one on how to maximize profits, and throughout the book discusses ways to engage and delight rather than annoy your potential customers.

Highly recommended for anyone that is faced with the challenge of choosing how to price and position a software product.
