Os Maias (Portuguese Edition)
Os Maias (Portuguese Edition)
Price: £0.77

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterly portrait of gilded decadence., 4 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A merciless forensic account of fin de siecle decadence in the higher reaches of Portuguese society. Queiroz slowly builds his plots and sub-plots, maintaining our sympathy for the dilettante Carlos and his friends, whilst at the same time appalling us at their insouciance and moral decline.

5.0 out of 5 stars The greatness of Welles, 4 Mar 2013

This review is from: Touch Of Evil [DVD] (DVD)
The fame of this film noir is justified. The genius of Welles is evident in his portrayal of an arrogant and corrupt police lietenant and in his direction, particularly evident in the famous opening sequences in a border town on the USA- Mexican frontier,

5.0 out of 5 stars Power Corrupts, 31 Jan 2013

This review is from: Sweet Smell Of Success [DVD] (DVD)
I re-visited this DVD after seeing the film many years ago, being interested in part by judging the effectiveness of the film score, in which the Chico Hamilton Quintet features. The power of the film resides in the twisted symbiosis of corrupt journalism and popular culture as exemplified by the power -mad columnist Hunsucker ( Burt Lancaster) and the creepy press agent played by Tony Curtis. With few exceptions the overall casting is very strong and the night-time atmosphere of Broadway is captured by excellent black and white cinematography.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Mood Music, 31 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jazz on Film: Film Noir (Audio CD)
An excellently researched and presented collection of jazz and jazz-influenced film scores. My only reservation would be where the boundary between the two ( jazz and jazz influence) is drawn. The compositions are sometimes evocative of persons, atmospheres or actions: others are pure jazz in a background context. A stand-out is the Duke Ellington score for "Anatomy of a Murder." The collection led me to re-visiting some of the titles on DVD and seeing others for the first time e.g.. "A Touch of Evil".

5.0 out of 5 stars The exoticism of an unusual composer, 8 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A well-played and well-recorded disc of three of Milhaud's pieces inspired by his travels. "L'homme et son désir" and "Le boeuf sur le toit" are products of his stay in Brazil (the latter full of exuberant brazilian rhythm). "La création du monde" is a score inspired by jazz music he came across in the United States.

by Mario Vargas Llosa
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Cultural genocide in the jungle., 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Vargos Llosa makes us reflect on the loss we suffer as tradition and culture are swept aside by modernisation and "progress".
Set in the Peruvian jungle, we witness the solitary struggle of an outsider in modern Peru who takes to the jungle, enabling a tribe to cling on to its tradition way of life by constantly wandering for one isolated group to another as a modern-day teller of stories and Myths. Vargos Llosa has researched environmental, archaeological, social and political issues to produce a challenge to the reader interested in the direction our society is taking.

Yo el supremo / I The Supreme
by Carlos Fuentes
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars The psyche of the dictator., 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A difficult read but worth the effort. Roa Bastos inhabits the very soul of the 19th Century Paraguayan dictator who is the subject of his novel. In so doing he provides food for thought on the ability of dictators to hold whole nations in thrall. Of interest to aficianados of the historical novel and those who respond to psychological and political elements in fiction.

by Alejo Carpentier
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars the enigma of Columbus., 30 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Told largely in his own words on his deathbed and as a visitor from the after life, Columbus indulges in a complex process of self- analysis and self-justification as his possible canonization hangs in the balance. A beautifully constructed and ironic re- construction of major events in world history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterpiece of social criticism set in 19th Century Portugal., 30 Dec 2012

The work of a master constructor of plots. The tragedy of the hapless Amelia at the mercy of the superficiality and cynicism of the clergy as exemplified by O Padre Amaro holds the reader enthralled from beginning to end.
