What to say? The plot is ludicrous, the acting frequently well over the top, it has the most implausible court scene in any movie ever, and the studio cut about a third of it out. You know what? it just doesn't matter. It's a film that shouts "Orson Welles made me" in virtually every scene, and is never dull, ever surprises and delights with visual invention, and has Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth in. Unless you have some sort of pathological aversion to Orson Welles (there are such unfortunates, I'm told), just watch it.

I started this review with only four stars and convinced myself that I was just being mean-spirited by the end of it and added the fifth.

An Introduction to Old Occitan
An Introduction to Old Occitan

4.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable but occasionally frustrating, 25 May 2014

The blurb resists the temptation to say (truthfully) that this is the best book available for learning Old Occitan, contenting itself with pointing out that is is the *only* book currently available ...

In the circumstances it would be churlish to complain too much, and there is very much about this book to admire and like. The drawbacks really all boil down to variations on one theme - it requires a great deal of background knowledge and is more of a smorgasbod for assembling your own grammar of Old Occitan than an organised presentation. The idea is to plunge you into texts at the outset and let you find your own way - a good method if you're sufficiently dedicated and have the right background, but the exact opposite of spoon-feeding.

To illustrate - nowhere in the grammatical parts is there any description of the forms and usage of first and second person pronouns. There are, however, exhaustive references in the dictionary part of the book to every single form which occurs in the reading selections, from which you can piece it all together; moreover the system works (unsurprisingly) very like Old French, and what Paden has done is to concentrate very largely on what is distinctive about Occitan rather than what would be familiar to someone who knows Old French. This of course means that the reader is assumed to know Old French, which is probably fair enough in the circumstances ...

There is a great deal about the development of the Occitan forms from Latin, which personally I found very interesting, but I'm dubious as to how far it helps with synchronic understanding of Old Occitan itself. I think Paden's MO is basically to assume knowledge of at least French and perhaps Latin or of another Romance language and leverage it to help learn Occitan.

Add a star if you've always hated to be spoon-fed ...

One of those phenomena where a review is almost beside the point - if you are into anime you pretty certainly know all about this already.

It's a no-brainer if you like anything else of Rumiko Takahashi's - you'll like this too. I promise.

I actually prefer it to Urusei Yatsura, partly because Ranma is much less of a jerk than Ataru. I was put off watching it for a long time by the weird premise, but I wish now I'd watched earlier. It's one of those deeply silly but highly enjoyable anime like "Slayers" which is just plain fun. To say it doesn't take itself too seriously is .. something of an understatement. And like Slayers it's got Megumi Hayashibara (as girl-type Ranma.) What are you waiting for?

2.0 out of 5 stars So bad I didn't finish it, 2 May 2014
The good thing about this is the production values. But that's it. Horribly derivative, ripping off sundry other much better anime.

I gave up after a few episodes. If it improves after that, apologies for misleading you ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, 2 Mar 2014

The general idea is a sort of cross between Jasper fforde's Thursday Next books and Charlie Stross' Laundry series. It's not quite up to their level but it's still a lot of fun.
Suffers a bit in coherence from its origins as a series. It's a bit monster-of-the-week to begin with.
But you can forgive a lot when the heroine is a kiss-ass, distinctly scary, no-nonsense crack government agent team leader Snow White.

All three of the Ayakashi series are worthwhile but this is undoubtedly the best. The art style takes a bit of getting used to but matches the general tone very well. It's easily the most visually spectacular of the three, and the plot doesn't disappoint either, though you'll need to keep your wits about you to follow it.

Also definitely the creepiest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Stephenson, 10 Nov 2013

In many of Neal Stephenson's books, his amazing inventiveness tends to overwhelm the plot and characterisation, and he's clever and knowledgeable enough that his fairly frequent oversimplifications or downright mistakes in his factual materials stick out rather painfully (contrast with Dan Brown, who clearly doesn't care about facts at all, so he's not even worth criticising.)

"Anathem", though, gets pretty much everything just right. The basic McGuffin is brilliant, and everything Just Works. Unfortunately it's one of those books that it's hard to praise properly without spoilers. Just read it!

Contains possibly my favourite line from any science fiction ever, again not quotable in its entirety without spoilers. It's about a protractor. Only Neal Stephenson could do this ....

CM seems on autopilot in this one. Hard to believe it's the same author who wrote the brilliant City and the City and Embassytown.

The general vibe and setting are a bit like Charlie Stross's Laundry novels, but nowhere near as good. Read them instead - or something else by China Mieville.

Smart and funny. Rather Neal Stephensonish, but satisfyingly thoroughly London-based. Lots of nice touches, like the heroine's elderly grandparents speaking early 21st century London yoofspeak, and many a joke making oblique references to Neuromancer, The Matrix, Blade Runner, and of course Isaac Asimov.

Properly scary and very nasty villains too.

Read it at one sitting.

Best novel narrated by a smartphone I've ever read ...
