5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, 21 Jan 2013

This clock is not cheap but so far (4 months) it has proved very accurate and reliable.

It takes one large D-type battery which was supplied with it, and we have ours mounted on the wall. It is quite large - about 12 inches wide and 3 inches deep, and it sticks out from the wall a couple of inches. It's made of plastic but it has a solid, quality feel about it, and it looks smart and business-llike.

It keeps time very well to within a few seconds over several months. The calendar mechanism is ingenious - it's all mechanical but it knows how long each month is over a four year period, so it ticks over automatically from "30 Nov" to "1 Dec" and "31 Dec" to "1 Jan" etc. - there's a fiddly little knob at the back to set the current year, but you only have to do that once, and then it keeps track of leap years on its own.

The only adjustment needed is when the clocks change from winter to summer time.

It does have an audible tick, but none of us has found that irritating yet.

Mounting it on the wall was not very difficult but it did involve drilling two level holes the right distance apart, then inserting the plugs and screws that were supplied.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh please stop humming, 21 Jan 2013
This review is from: Haydn: Sonatas (Audio CD)
This is a very good recording - I mean technically it's very good, clear and well balanced, and the Steinway sounds lovely - but he hums all the time! And not unobtrusively like Gould. The effect is to remind you that he's there all the time and to intrude on the music. This is a real shame because his playing is fresh and engaging.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful film, poor quality DVD, 28 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of my all time favourite films, with a fantastic cast and a brilliant script (director Tom Stoppard adapted it from his own play), but this Dutch import DVD is a very poor print - it looked very grainy and was much too dark in many scenes. Which, for the money, is a shame -- this movie deserves better.

Marware Sportfolio for MacBook 13", Black

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat and durable case for your macbook, 5 Sep 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've used this case every day since December 2009. It's light and strong and has stood up pretty well to heavy usage.

Pros: It also looks smart and it's so much better than those great Leviathan bags I used to have for my ThinkPad.

Cons: (1) It's not quite big enough! You can get the Macbook and a small notebook in the main bag, and maybe a few sheets of A4 paper and that's about it. The side zip pocket is handy and well made, but the power adapter + UK plug makes an ugly bulge in the side. So mine is marked all over that side with little nicks and scuffs.
(2) The handles could be a bit stronger: the stitching started working loose on one side and last week (after 20 months daily use) one of the handles came completely out. Fortunately it was just the stitching, so I've been able to repair it.

On the whole, I recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but not that wonderful, 4 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For the money I was hoping for something a but more robust. It writes smoothly and has worked fine so far, but it remains to be seen if it's reliable. I've found the plastic ridges on the barrel are not that comfortable to hold, and you need to tighten the removable silvery bit at the tip to stop it clicking.

3.0 out of 5 stars Handle with care..., 26 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Proporta leather pouch is smart and slim. It makes a neat cover for the iPhone, that does not increase the bulk of the phone in your pocket like a plastic bumper or some of the Filofax-like folding cases. It was delivered promptly and comes with a lifetime warranty. The leather is nice to handle, and still looks good after the six months of daily use that I have had out of it so far.

However: as noted on other reviews, the stitching on the seams of mine has come loose as the top, and part of the slim line of plastic sealant at the opening has also come off. The worst problem with it is that it does not grip the phone very tightly, in fact it does not really grip the phone at all. On three occasions now I've been carrying my phone in the case and it has slipped out and hit the ground, fortunately with only minor damage.

So, nice case, but not quite as secure and protective as it could be.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and poorly presented jumble of a book, 11 Mar 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The R Book (Hardcover)
Normally the Amazon reviews are reliable but I feel let down on this one. I parted with [] for this edition on the basis of the positive reviews here but now I wish had read more about it on Amazon.com where there is some more negative (and in my opinion more accurate) feedback.

I was put off as soon as I picked it up by the abysmal formatting of the programming code examples. They are typeset in Arial without any regard for spacing or alignment, and they compare very badly to any of Donald Knuth's books (for example) where the programming code is beautifully presented. To me, this is not just a matter of aesthetics -- proper spacing, indentation, and highlighting of keywords make code examples much easier to understand and much more useful.

The rest of the book design is little better. For the table of contents you just get a single page with the chapter headings. There's nothing else at all to tell you what's in each chapter except a paragraph or two at the start of each one. There are no numbered subheadings, no running titles etc, and yet some of the chapters are 80 pages long! So it's really hard to find where a topic starts and stops. The page breaks all appear to be completely arbitrary as well, so you get breaks in the middle of code examples, in the middle of long bullet lists, in the middle of maths formulae, and even display boxes. All of these add up to make the damn thing unpleasant to use.

My strong recommendation is to go to a real bookshop or a library and have a good look through it to see if these issues bother you, before you part with your money. As for me, I am back on my hunt for a good general purpose book on R.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, gentle, and uplifting, 20 April 2010
I have no claim to any great musicality or understanding of the history and background of these pieces, but this album has long been one of my absolute favourites and it deserves at least one more five star review. The music is simple, just the piano, but also reflective and uplifting. There is also plenty of it on this disk: the first sonata takes 18 minutes, the second 13, and the third over 25. You also get the lovely Adagio in B minor (8 mins) as well as the Rondo in D major (6 mins). As the cover shows, Horowitz recorded these pieces in old age and they sound as if he was just playing them for pleasure. A real treat.

2.0 out of 5 stars OK while it lasted, 3 Aug 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Our Crayola shower radio has packed up after only 18 months. Some diagnostics showed it was the speaker that had stopped working, but there was no possibility of replacing it because it was so firmly glued in place.

We bought it because it was the only shower-proof one we could find. It was OK while it lasted, but if you're thinking about getting one bear in mind

- the reception was poor at best (and this is in London with a good FM signal)

- it's a fiddle to tune it and set the preset stations

- it eats batteries, roughly four AAs per month

- it loses all the presets and the time setting if you don't replace the batteries promptly

4.0 out of 5 stars Robust and well made holder, 16 July 2008
This Garmin-branded holder fits all the eTrex range and has stood up well to more than 12 months use now. There's a hole at the bottom for the lanyard and you can use all the buttons without taking the unit out of the holder. In the wet it can be a bit difficult to see the screen if you get rain behind the plastic window in the case.

My only real gripe is that the clip on the back is mounted vertically, and so it's awkward to clip it to the gear loops on the shoulder straps of my rucsac.
