5.0 out of 5 stars Looked funny, was hilarious., 28 Dec. 2009
I went to see this movie at the cinema with two male friends. After taking some serious questioning as to whether I {the lone female} merely wanted to see it because George Clooney was in it, they capitulated. The three of us then spent the next couple of hours doubled up at this inventively funny movie. Ewan MacGregor plays the journalist out to prove himself to perfection, and is matched by George Clooney's secretive, mildly paranoid, overly confident former psi-spy. Kevin Spacey is wonderfully loathesome as the creep he was in training with, and Jeff Bridges may well have been born to play the Hippy commander whose military training program involves dancing, finding one's centre, and learning to run through walls. With varied levels of success.
Neatly switching between Clooney's current mission in 90s Iraq, and his younger days as a trainee in the psychic arts (with a Beatles haircut), the film has a streak of dark humour running through it which is little short of sublime. Perhaps not to everybody's taste, but honestly - what is?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex, Murder & Plastic Surgery, 21 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An early example of the work of Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who shot to international stardom with 'No Country For Old Men', and 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'.
This deliciously, sinfully funny film tells the story of what happens to an out-of-work actor in Barcelona, who takes a job as a phone-sex operator. Starting an affair with a beautiful, mysterious woman, she reveals to him that she is unhappily married to a repressed homosexual plastic surgeon. When he agrees to help her get a divorce {a plan incidentally, which culminates on the night he has an audition for a role in an American movie} he invites into his life a whirlwind of illicit sex, mistaken identity, lies, hitmen, angry spouses, directors, agents, and fainting American starlets. Not to mention the 'Boca A Boca' club. But don't worry, even in Spain we still like Hollywood endings...

5.0 out of 5 stars Turn Round & Let Me See You, 21 Nov. 2009
This review is from: After the Sunset (Audio CD)
A thoroughly enjoyable film, with a great cast and stunning locations, can only be enhanced by a sizzling soundtrack which goes straight to your hips. Infectiously cheerful, in particular 'The Pineapple Song', 'I Got It', and 'You Never Know' will have all but the most staid and boring amongst us picturing ourselves beneath the Caribbean skies, and bobbing to the beat. Those who love reggae, soul, dance, and simple feelgood music which brings the eternal summer into your heart and your feet, will delight in this collection. The only warning which must be made is that you will quite possibly drive friends and relatives insane, dancing around the house, singing and swaying to the beat, long after the music has stopped.
