Candle Flame (A Brother Athelstan Medieval Mystery)
Candle Flame (A Brother Athelstan Medieval Mystery)
by Paul Doherty
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 15.18

5.0 out of 5 stars a godd read!, 21 April 2014

It is hard to maintain the quality of a long-running series, but Paul Doherty achives this with his latest volume in the 'Brother Athelstan' series. The plot is interesting the the historical background, as ever, is sharp and informative. This is an excellent way for those without any background in history to familiarise themselves with a somewhat difficult period.

Although this is a long-running series, Donna Leon certainly hasn't 'run out of steam'. The story and characters remain fresh & absorbing. The background detail on Venice is a delight.

5.0 out of 5 stars super non-fiction title by an accomplished writer, 16 Feb 2014

I love her Brunetti books & found this non-fiction title about the Venetians/Italians informative & entertaining. I couldn't put it down until I had swallowed it in one gulp! Donna Leon writes beautiful prose & this book is as well written as it is insightful. I would highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A collection of novellas, 10 Mar 2013

Whilst all the stories in this collection are good individually, all except one were previously published under other titles. This is very irritating, as I now have them twice over!

The size is good & it is an attractive item. It would have been useful had the lid fixed on a little more firmly.

5.0 out of 5 stars practical & full of ideas, 8 July 2011
As a seasoned cook, I still found a great number of ideas for simple yet tasty meals from this attractively presented book. Those which I tasted at my cousin's house . . which encouraged me to buy the book . . were all delicious & could be frozen & served up at a later date for either everyday or for special occasions. Above all, the recipes WORK!
