5.0 out of 5 stars Very Funny Send-Up Of The Scarlet Pimpernel, 2 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very Funny send up of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Not all of the regular Carry Ons are present in this film, but those who are really do their bit of having a great laugh as the Black Fingernail, Sir Roger Ffing with two Fs (Sid James) and his sidekick, Lord Darcy (Jim Dale) travel into the heart of the French Revolution to rescue Lords and Ladies, and Men and Women of both sexes from Madam La Guillotine. Opposing them is Citizen Camembert (Kenneth Williams) and his loony sidekick Citizen Bidet (Peter Butterworth) aided by Camembert's sister played by the lovely Joan Sims. Adding glamour to the proceedings is Dany Robin as a French princess whom The Fingernail attempts to rescue, fails and spends the rest of the film trying to free her from Camembert. Overall, it is a very funny film, there are some hilarious moments, the duel between Camembert and Ffing, the rescue of the aristocrats from the guillotine after the executioner has been guillotined in error, and the final scenes in the Chateau de Neuf are wonderfully staged.

Although this film was made during the late '60s, it has stood up well and is still very entertaining today. There are a couple of extras on the disc along with a collectors booklet. Picture and sound are up to standard as well which makes this disc a pretty good buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Kitchen Sink Drama of the '60s, 25 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: This is My Street [DVD] (DVD)
I have not seen this film for many years, so was grateful for being able to purchase a copy which upon viewing is pretty good with a good soundtrack. A typical kitchen sink drama which were very popular during the early '60s when censorship was beginning to be more relaxed and many films were being released exploring human relationships in greater detail. The lovely June Ritchie (A Kind of Loving) plays Margery Graham who is trapped in an unhappy marriage and is keen to seek a life elsewhere. When her mother (Avice Landon) who lives next door takes in a lodger, Harry (Ian Hendry), he takes a shine to Margery and starts a relationship with her despite the fact that Margery is already married. Then, her sister turns up played by Annette Andre and he begins a relationship with her much to the consternation of Margery and her mother. It does get a little complicated then, and almost ends in tragedy.

A worthy film, good to look at, although a bit talky, it does convey the working class idealism which pervaded during those far off days. There are a few good supporting actors, some of which are household names nowadays such as John Hurt who looks remarkably young in this film. A good buy for fans of Kitchen Sink dramas, which they do not make nowadays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Laurel and Hardy Comedy, 17 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A few years ago, a box set of Laurel and Hardy films was released containing something like 21 DVDs. For some reason, this classic comedy was not in the set. So, it is more than welcome that this very funny film can be purchased separately to add to the set. It is one of their best comedies; Stan and Ollie, whilst in Scotland collecting their supposed inheritance, accidently join the Army and are sent to India. There are some really funny set pieces in this film, and of course, James Finlayson makes an appearance like he usually does in a Laurel and Hardy comedy. Picture and sound for a film made during the mid 1930s is pretty good making this a worthwhile purchase not only for Laurel and Hardy fans, but also fans of comedies from the so-called golden age of comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Extremely Well, 17 May 2014

Having set up a home network system these past few months using a Powerline Plug system, I realised that I needed an Ethernet port to connect all my components together without constantly switching the leads. This TP-Link Port is ideal since there are five ports, one which is needed for the Powerline Ethernet from the wall. The other four are connected to my Samsung Smart TV; 3d Smart Blu-Ray, PS3 and an Android StreamTV Box. All the components work well without drop outs, stuttering etc. At the price being offered, it is great value and a worthwhile component for any home networking system. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic Film of the '30s, 4 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Difficult to purchase in the UK, I welcomed the opportunity to purchase a copy from an overseas seller. Although the packaging is in Spanish, and the DVD has Spanish subtitles, they can be switched off. For years, this Errol Flynn classic has been one of my favourite all time films. Full of action, with a very strong love interest at the core centre of the story; two brothers love the same woman played by the lovely Olivia de Havilland. Most of the action takes place on the north-west frontier of India with British forces being threatened by a local tribesman, Surit Khan, whose life is once saved by a British officer played by Errol Flynn. After a British garrison is massacred by Khan's tribesmen, the action moves to the Crimea where Khan has taken refuge with Russian forces at Balaclava. The story culminates in the famous Charge along the Valley of Death where Russian lines are broken, albeit with terrible loss to British forces.

Although historically inaccurate, it doesn't matter because, after all, it is just a great action movie. The only downside of the film is that during the filming of the charge, many horses were killed or seriously injured owing to trip wires being used. This led to the film industry being banned from using such devices in future films.

Still, it is a great film to watch, the DVD has good picture and sound bearing in mind the film's age. I do think however, it should be more freely available for purchase in the UK, perhaps even on Blu-Ray.

5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Version of War of The Worlds, 18 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Mysterians [1957] [DVD] (DVD)
I recall seeing this classic Japanese sci-fi movie on one of the local flea-pits(now long closed which is a shame). I found it very entertaining at the time. Years later, well 55 years later to be honest, I snapped up this copy because it was being sold at a good price and I was curious more than anything else since it had been such a long time since I had seen it.

I was not disappointed. Being a movie buff, I am easy to please, and being well aware of the times in which it was made, I knew the effects were no where near as good as they would be today. Nevertheless, the effects were very good for the times. The highlight of the movie for me was the appearance of the giant robot which set about flattening towns until being brought down by troops exploding a bridge. These scenes have to be seen to be believed! The rest of the movie is taken up with Japanese troops trying to destroy The Mysterians invasion of the earth, many scenes reminiscent of George Pal's version of War of The Worlds (still one of the best Sci-Fi's ever made in my view.) A very good entertaining movie, as long as you aren't too critical of the effects.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Hokum Godzilla Movie, 18 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Godzilla [1954] [DVD] (DVD)
I hadn't seen this original version before, although I have seen a couple of the other Godzilla movies, especially the hilarious Godzilla vs King Kong which is a gas!! This is worth seeing for it was quite an achievement when it was made during the early 1950s as Japan was recovering from the devastation of World War 2. Alright, the effects are ropey, but, hey this was long before CGI was available. I found it very entertaining, although it did drag a little about 40 minutes into the movie before the mighty Godzilla turned up to wreck Tokyo. Overall, worth a view, decent picture and sound, there are a few extras worth noting, particularly a trailer. There is also a 30 page booklet included which is very useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value, 25 Jan. 2014

Needing an updated HDMI Lead because of a recent failure with a lead I was using for Virgin Tivo Box, (Luckily, I had a spare one, but wanted an extra one anyway) I shopped around and was appalled at some of the prices being offered in some of the shops. £40 plus some were charging!! The mind boggles!!

Deciding to check with Amazon online however, I came across this lead which prompted me to make a purchase after reading many positive reviews. It arrived within a couple of days, was connected to my Virgin Tivo Box, and hooray!! it was working extremely well. Since I now have a 3D Smart TV it is a very good buy. So far, so good, it has never let me down. Shop around by all means for HDMI Leads, but don't be tempted by the farcial prices being offered. You wont go far wrong with this at this price. A bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile Anti Virus Software, 23 Jan. 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
PC and Laptop users are spoiled for choice nowadays as regarding PC and Laptop Security. The internet has grown to huge proportions over the last few years and with broadband speeds accelerating no user would be without good security software. I have not used McAfee before but have been tempted to try this for some time, especially since my last security software failed miserably causing me to purchase a different anti-virus on my desktop. This particular one is being used on my laptop and since I also have an internal server running via a Powerline Network system it was necessary to ensure that a secure anti-virus software was installed.

There are two ways to install this software; one via the website, then matching up the product key which is printed on the guide, then you just follow the onscreen instructions. I decided to install this direct from the CD which I have done in the past, rather than from the website. It did take a while to install, and the laptop crashed whilst the update was running. Possibly because the update procedure was running a little slow. However, once I restarted, the software was up and running. So far, I have not encountered any problems, it is running smoothly, updating when necessary and seems working well. So far, so good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated Rix Farce, 7 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recall years ago that Brian Rix and co were famous for their Whitehall farces, some of them being transmitted on BBC TV on a Sunday night. The company did transfer their comedy talents to the big screen, some of which are quite funny today, despite their dated production values. This is one of the lesser ones. The cast is first rate though, some of the great comedy actors of their time appear in this; Dora Bryan; Liz Fraser; Leo Franklyn; Irene Handl and making a guest appearance, one of the all-time great stand up comedians, Ronald Shiner.

The film does have its moments though, the courtroom scene is wonderfully funny. The great character actor Kynaston Reeves playing a deaf magistrate causes chaos in the court with his numerous misunderstandings, much to the dismay of the clerk of the court played by another wonderful character actor, John Le Mesurier.

Sharp eyed viewers will spot the lovely Elspet Gray, who also happened to be Lady Rix in a farcial wedding scene in a tent. Worth a view, especially for older viewers who remember the golden oldie comedy teams of yesteryear, they were also great characters as well. Picture and sound are pretty decent.
