5.0 out of 5 stars Great set of instrumentals from a great pair of musicians, 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A 'Best of' from 4 albums made together, this is an excellent compilation showing off their prowess in a great set of tunes, not least in a couple of arrangements of Charles Mingus pieces (including the ubiquitous 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat')

4.0 out of 5 stars Where's George Gently then?, 23 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
He, and his creator, Alan Hunter are the most glaring omissions I've so far found in this book, together with the similarly named Dirk Gently (Holistic Detective), the creation of Douglas Adams. I will report on any others as I
find them - or rather, don't find them...
Update, 25/10/13: other omissions, 'Dangerous' Davies, the Last Detective (Leslie Thomas) and Simon Iff, Magician/Detective (Aleister Crowley).

Mine had pages missing, pages duplicated and pages out of sequence; don't know how many copies are thus affected, but if you buy it, check it.

The Ingoldsby legends, or, Mirth & marvels (Everyman's library-no.185)
The Ingoldsby legends, or, Mirth & marvels (Everyman's library-no.185)
by Thomas Ingoldsby
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Fallen out of favour - or just forgotten?, 3 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Rev Richard Barham's 'Ingoldsby Legends' seem to be suffering unmerited neglect currently, and yet in their day (mid-19th Century) were extremely popular. These pastiches of old murder/supernatural ballads gallop along at a heck of a pace and I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at some of the rhymes; if you like your poetry unpretentious/ludicrous, this is a rollicking good read.

The Mouse in the Mountain (Rue Morgue Vintage Gumshoe Mystery)

5.0 out of 5 stars Comedy Crime; An Excellent Read., 3 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is the first of three crime stories by this author, featuring Doan, the hard-boiled detective, and Carstairs, the pedigree Great Dane he won in a craps game; it's difficult to tell which is the brains of the outfit - intelligence is pretty evenly distributed between man and mutt! If you like your crime stories with a good dash of comedy (a la Pamela Branch, Edmund Crispin, Colin Watson etc etc) you should certainly enjoy this title and its successors, 'Sally's in the Alley' (also from 1943) and 'Oh Murderer Mine' (1946).
I recommend all three very strongly.
Footnote; Unfortunately Mr Davis's Life was not such a breeze as his stories; he never achieved wealth or fame and committed suicide aged 40.

Agatha Raisin and a Spoonful of Poison
Agatha Raisin and a Spoonful of Poison
by M. C. Beaton
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.24

3.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy research?, 5 Aug 2013
On page 158 Ms Beaton refers to two of the characters going to an operatic performance; 'Lady Macbeth of Minsk'(sic) by Prokofiev: 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District' is in fact by Shostakovich. Shame on you Ms Beaton!

2.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this Antique., 2 July 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Despite its title - which suggests a catalogue of all Bristol models - this book does not go beyond the 410 of 1966; thus it becomes apparent that this is a facsimile of a very old book, though nowhere is this indicated. Consisting mainly of road tests and specifications, there are no original photographs and those reproduced from the road tests are, of necessity, very poor.
I had arranged to return my copy for a refund within a half-hour of its arrival.
Avoid.
