The Color Of Money [DVD] [1987]
The Color Of Money [DVD] [1987]

5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated Paul Newman classic., 3 Mar. 2010
Ok this is not the most profound film ever - pool as a subject matter, but it is a truly underrated flick. Much as other films get the rave reviews from the 80s this flick really does capture some of the zeitgeist as well as any other films of the era and Newman's performance is for me the best of his career and well worthy of the Best Actor Oscar. Whether you are a pool player or not his performance is worth seeing this film for alone, but even if you are'nt the tournament at the end is fantastic also. Slightly unsatisfying ending, but we'll forgive that - this is a great film.

5.0 out of 5 stars First class romantic comedy., 3 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Moliere [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
Beautiful setting, brilliant acting, humorous, poignant and self-effacing this is a top quality film it really is. As befits such a film, the literary genius of Moliere is the main star of the film, as is the humanity behind much of the humour. Not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous film., 3 Mar. 2010
This review is from: Hidden (cache) [DVD] (DVD)
This is self-evidently a great film from minute 1 right until the end. It is brilliantly acted, masterfully directed and works on many levels. Not a film for the mentally challenged, this is probably the most memorable thriller I have ever seen; frankly nothing else comes close. An amazing film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great films tous les deux., 3 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I think Manon des Sources is better than Jean de Florette part 1, but they really are different parts of the same whole. Memorable in so many ways - Yves Montand is brilliant as is Daniel Auteuil as the backward nephew, these films are witty, sharp, poignant and with the most memorable plot twist at the end - better even than the usual suspects. Top drawer.

2.0 out of 5 stars The film I should have skipped, 3 Mar. 2010
I found this a very unsatisfying film. Ponderous, unengaging, implausible this and more it really is one of those films where you need to have your hand on the fast forward button also. A snoozefest.

The Big Lebowski (Special Edition) [DVD]
The Big Lebowski (Special Edition) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Jeff Bridges
Offered by DVD Overstocks
Price: £4.13

5.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes there's a man....., 22 Feb. 2010
And I'm talking 'bout the Dude here.... this film has it all, a soiled rug, an in and out burger joint, a Jackie Treehorn beach party, and a few White Russians on the way. Walter, the Dude and Donny take you on a surreal journey for 90 minutes that will have you in stitches for weeks if not years after. How Jeff Bridges did not get an Oscar for his timeless depiction of the Dude is one of the great injustices of all time, reminding me of one of those times in 'Nam.... Don't miss this film it is one of the all time greats.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst films ever., 22 Feb. 2010
This review is from: The Fisher King [DVD] (DVD)
I think if you had to combine a separate set of elements into a film that combined to make me detest it as much as possible you would come pretty close to the Fisher King. Why so? It combines a false humility about its central message, the characterisation is unbelievable, the modern parable like theme engendered to show generic human truths is so cloyed and contrived that it is just nauseating, and finally Robin Williams. When Robin Williams is good, he is funny, sharp and quick, when he is bad he plays to the oh so sweet as Mum's apple tart stereotype that you just can't stomach it. Finally there are some scenes in here invoking the parable like message in this that are completely incongruous. Whilst many appear to like this film on this board I must disagree, for me the Fisher King is one of the most pretentious films ever made. It is simply awful.

The Economics of Innocent Fraud

3.0 out of 5 stars Some bits are good, some bits less so., 22 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Galbraith has a brand and a wit and wisdom that is instantly recognisable. His writing is accessible and some of his thoughts are portentuous - in particular his interpretation of the internal dynamics of the modern corporation are thoughtful for an academic not schooled in the politics of the modern workplace. In other places, his thought is far from original - the well worn passages about the modern military/ industrial complex are 50 years old. So overall it is good, but for a small book there is too much chaff with the wheat, especially when there has been so much more to say on the subject.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying, 22 Feb. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is difficult to do justice to a subject like Lincoln, even isolating one part of it in this case his depression. I just found this book tedious, isolating the medical questionmarks is a rather pointless exercise - we can take it as a known known that Lincoln was a depressive, and then you just churn through more unneccessary anecdotes and you think in the end..... I have better things to do than read this. And indeed you should have better things to do.
