3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but thin storyline...., 22 May 2012
This review is from: The Descendants DVD (DVD)
This is a good film - well acted and well done - however, notwithstanding the grief element and the property dimension the real star of the film is Hawaii - which was pretty much as intended. Clooney is very good as is the elder daughter, but it is pedestrian and the infidelity of the wife who is about to die, is really milked through and through the film. So entertaining enough, but really not a very substantial film.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sentimental drivel, peppered with boring anecdotes., 19 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having previously released a book entitled charmingly Manchester Utd ruined my life, one imagines that Mr Shindler found the temptation of rounding on City for a few £ to be an opportunity too good to miss. Shindler comes across as a sympathetic guy, but without putting it too harshly, an old woman. The reasons he falls out of love with City are incoherent, old-fashioned and uninteresting - they say more about him than they do about MCFC & one detects more than an element of disingenuousness in the tale - why without it you could not come up with a story to tell at all.... and then there are the anecdotes about being a single elder man later in the book and pages and pages on the challenges of online dating and contemplating sex with a new partner after 30 years marriage. Too much information and too much tedium.

So in the end all that leads you to buy this book is the provocative title, which as a City fan I fell for. Do not be conned - this is a rotten book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Slow, ponderous and implausible..., 5 May 2012
This review is from: Talk To Her [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Well, I must say that this is a director whose works really do not work for me; slow, ponderous, implausible; just the most tedious concentration on the most irrelevant details that are supposed somehow to create an atmosphere - and the characters really; just odd to put it mildly. People just get bowled over by a reputation - in my opinion Almodovar is like the King with no clothes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for such a seminal PM, 5 May 2012
This review is from: The Iron Lady [DVD] (DVD)
This is a puzzling film in many respects; it purports to show the personal side of Mrs T, and yet we really do not get much of an inkling of that side of things - it is just too staged - and the film makers have completely over-egged the old age of Mrs T - it really adds very little value overall - we are just left looking at a vulnerable and unhealthy old woman - which we understand after a 5 minutes let alone 40 plus on her current status. On the plus side - many of the parliamentary scenes are convincing - however there was so much more that could have been used - we get minor insights into the relationship with Geoffrey Howe, but very few of the other major players at all - which really was a huge opportunity missed - I saw no Nigel Lawson, no Douglas Hurd etc etc. On the plus side, Meryl Streep is predictably outstanding (where is she not) but overall a very disappointing effort.

1.0 out of 5 stars Implausible guff..., 28 April 2012
Looks nice - slightly disturbing and out there, seems intriguing for a while, has a stunning leading lady to keep us from pressing the eject button, we wait and wait for the plot to develop; we see several aesthetically intriguing scenes & then we realise that this film has a storyline that is completely off the rails - it is a ludicrous film.

2.0 out of 5 stars Miserable and ponderous, 28 Mar. 2012
I wanted to like this film and let it work but it just did'nt. Without knowing the book, the mood is clearly the important thing in this story and it really just went to excessive lengths to define the miserable and doom laden trajectory of the story. The weather is tedious; yes we know after 30 minutes it is miserable weather in Yorkshire all of the time and then Heathcliff well where do you start - says nothing, does nothing and just wants the woman of his dreams what a loser. Not much more to say, but a more miserable and ponderous film it is hard to imagine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favourite film ever., 24 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is not a perfect movie by any stretch; the chronology and events often do not run smoothly, and some of the storyline is more than a bit contrived. However as with all great works we suspend our disbelief, for this is a passionate film with grand sweeping themes at its heart; the nature of true love, romance, integrity, revenge, honour and sacrifice. Add to that one of the best soundtracks on any movie ever as well as magnificent scenery and the most memorable ending to any film I have ever viewed and you have all the reasons that this is my favourite film ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film on 50s style comic book hero, 26 Dec. 2011
I think this film has all the components you require for a comic flick hero - romance, a nice story, good action sequences; a bad guy who really is bad and great special effects. The ending was not to my liking, but apart from that a thoroughly enjoyable film in every way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting insights into the Steve Jobs success story, 21 Dec. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For anyone interested in business and design this is a must read; what is so interesting about it is the extent to which the ultimate success and triumph of the man was built on a succession of what can only be described as failures; getting booted out of Apple; the NeXT adventure which can only be described as random and the chance success of Pixar; a revelation inasfar as it was based as the man himself admitted on luck and instinct against the conventional business tools he had acquired as a leader at Apple. This last deal really made the man and his subsequent unparalleled triumphs with Apple were based on the philosophy that he was true to in his business career; namely the preeminence of good design in creating products of unimaginable beauty and simplicity. Given this life story and the eccentricities of the man (esp. his quite awful behaviour at times) it would be hard to produce a book that was anything but interesting. At times it does go too deep and descend into areas that are unnecessary and irrelevant as is the wont of biographies of major US business success stories and leaders who are viewed as demi-Gods; but it certainly brings out the chain of events that made the man the success he was, exposes his strengths and weaknesses and brings more life to a story that a story that has become a part of our culture. You cannot ask for more than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Relevant in so many ways..., 19 Nov. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The story of Bobby Fischer is a relatively simple one; a youth spent mastering chess to an almost unfathomable level so that he could take on an empire of trained chess professionals and prevail single handedly. What an amazing achievement - few individuals in any field of human endeavour can lay such a claim. And yet what a cost - Fischer was a deeply troubled individual whose obsession with chess alienated him from all other features of human experience - the most telling and poignant moment of the film for me was the revelation of his last words. People can choose to judge the man of course or lay it down to deep seated psychological flaws which I think get the cause-effect relationship wrong; here was the life of a man whose single minded obsession revealed that this is not the way to lead a happy and enduringly successful life. Showing that is the mark of a great film.
