3.0 out of 5 stars funny, 30 Sept. 2013

Bough this for my husband's bad movie collection. This movie fit right in. It doesn't take itself seriously at all and that is what makes it fun. It takes many horror cliches and runs with it. The beautiful lady who just happens to know how to shoot a bow and arrow and kill orcs with it, for instance. Sure this movie won't be for everyone, but those who can enjoy movies that take the mickey out of a genre certainly can.
There are some very direct quotes from Lord of the Rings which is funny, and they prove how important a sound track can be... watch out for the battle which is fought accompanied by rather cheerful music coming from a radio...ridiculous.

The Matrix is a great film. The picture quality and sound are fabulous on the Blu-ray edition. It blew me away especially during the special effects sequences. Great bonus features as well. I especially enjoyed the audio commentary by the critics of the movie. A rather unusual move but entirely in keeping, I feel with the movie.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much more, 30 Sept. 2013

I have watched all the resident evil movies and was surprised to hear that this movie had some of those characters return that were killed off earlier in the series. How could that be? It was nice that all the original actors returned, and the way they brought these characters back was really ingenious and befitting the series. The problem with this movie for me is that they bring in lots of great ideas but do far too little with it to do it any justice. They seem to be running through the plot having no time for anything except the action sequences. That actually meant that I was not very engaged with the story. In fact, the action sequences were rather disappointing as well. It could be described as boring at times as there was just too much repetition. Sad to have wasted money on this.

Jumper (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray) [2008]
Dvd ~ Hayden Christensen
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars good affordable 3D, 30 Sept. 2013

I bought this edition not expecting too much, after all how many 3D movies actually benefit from the extra dimension? Besides, this one is relatively cheap. In this case it isn't an odd bug that flies by, the 3D is visible throughout the movie. Every time a jump takes place, all the locations, the all benefited from the extra depth. I did need to update the software on my Blu-ray player to see it in all it's glory, but I must say I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

The problem for me with this movie is that is doesn't deliver what it promises on the packaging. On the cover we see a woman with a bare midriff and two swords. I believe the main character didn't hold as much as a knife in the entire movie so what happened to the menacing warrior woman on the cover who is partaking in the "ultimate battle for a nation"? It is also described as an epic starring people like Peter O'Toole. O'Toole has about three lines in the entire movie and can be seen for less than a minute. The only redeeming fact for me is the presence of John Rhys- Davies who is always good in my opinion.
As to the plot, it follows the biblical story of Esther.
Generally epic biblical stories tend to be somewhat slower paced, however they can be good. In this case I found it slow and boring. A threat is suggested and preparation for battle and slaughter, but you only really see the king practice sword fighting inside a ring of people. The main problem for me was my lack of belief in the central romance which is rather central to the story being told.

I would advise anyone willing to buy this DVD to forget the packaging and assume that it is a slow biblical story, perhaps then (with adjusted expectations) it is not so bad after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars can't stop smiling, 11 Jan. 2013

The title might scare some people off, but just watch it! Unlike some of the other sweet 50's comedies it is not only for girls, my husband actually enjoys this one (though he might be slightly hesitant to confess it to other men). It is one of the few movies that has you smiling from start to finish. Debbie Reynolds is a pure treat. She is absolutely charming as the 17 year old river boat girl forced to make her way in the big world. The comedy comes from all the miscommunications throughout. Her innocence and ability to misinterpret what others say. After all she's going to do some painting with a boy(when invited to go paint the town red). It contains the wonderful song Tammy which hums on in your mind long after Debbie has stopped singing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful brass, 11 Jan. 2013

This is a compilation of movie music played by one of the best brass bands, if not the best. Since "Brassed off" I do have a soft spot for the Grimethorpe colliery band. As to the repertoire, there is some John Barry and plenty of John Williams to enjoy. Especially moving is the rendition of the Barbarian horde from Gladiator (the last track). Personally I find the Chicken little piece to be slightly misplaced. All the other pieces are such classics that I think it would have been better to add perhaps something from Jerry Goldsmith's or perhaps Hans Zimmer's repertoire. On the whole brilliant!

This work is interesting but I think for me the problem is the translator. The initial pages (approxiamtely 12, pages which is about half the book)are filled with the translator's rather strong opinion. This can be considered rather problematic as the piece itself is a philosophical reflection. By first reading the translators opinion you are already directed into which way you should think, which I find goes against the grain.
