5.0 out of 5 stars Very important philosophical approach, 9 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Science Delusion (Paperback)
While scientists admit that they do not know everything, what they seem less ready to concede is the intrinsic weakness of the philosophical mechanisms they rely on, namely 1)The Scientific Method and 2)Peer Review. Science is as corruptible as any religion, because it ultimately is a human and thus imperfect exercise. Sheldrake's dissection is a joy to read and gives a sense of hope that there may be a philosphical way out of science's recent ignobilities such as global warming, Big Pharma's distortion of medicine and university courses teaching obsolete ideas rather than jeopardise the cash cow. In a world where the lines between science, technology, and politics are blurred beyond truth, Sheldrake shows us a way forward.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chunky, solid, powerful, 9 Aug. 2013

Nice to have confidence in a good machine. First time I tried it was not a success. Byt the second time, I'd realised you need a technique to get the best out of it. Don't tickle the bushes, get stuck in and keep standing back to check your line and progress. Cuts well. It's heavy, so you have to take rests, but that doesn't detract from the machine itself, which seems well suited to the job.,

I used this to patch between a Phantom-power supply and an audio interface. Perfect for the job, not too long, no discernible noise, solidly made, and feels like it will last ages. Good value for less than three quid.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made a big difference, 2 Jun. 2012

Took five minutes to install this - take phonepoint faceplate off, fit this, put faceplate back on top of it. You just need a screwdriver. Then reconnect your broadband router/modem. It can take a while for the router and ISP to renegotiate the speed - I forgot about it for a few hours. When I next checked, speed was up from less than three megabits to nearly four. I thought that was pretty good. Now, several days later, speed has risen to over 4.7 megabits. Makes a big difference for bandwidth-hungry uses like TV-on-demand. Definitely worth the money for me, but I understand it doesn't work on every phone socket.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality and looks like a desk lamp - but isn't, 21 Jan. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Considering that all it has to do is carry a bulb and supply electricity to it, there is so much wrong with this lamp.
* The switch is on the cord rather than the lamp head, although the lamp head is drilled for a switch. A change of design to reduce costs perhaps? But it makes the lamp that much more inconvenient to use. If the switch were in the right place, I could get all this cable off the desk and out of the way.
* There is so much friction on the bulb holder that the force you have to apply just to screw the bulb in is enough to damage the bulb. And the terminal is not sprung, so you've no idea whether you've screwed it enough.
* Mine switches itself off at random, so it is probably electrically unsound - which brings safety concerns. And it cannot be disassembled for simple repairs.
* There is a limit to the travel of the lamp head - once the back arm is vertical, that's your lot. Other desk lamps allow the arm to go beyond 90 degrees so you've more reach.
All in all, it looks like a desk lamp but it's misleading. Cheap rubbish. Recommend you find something else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too inconsistent for beginners; also hardware oriented, 31 Dec. 2011
This book is a distillation of interviews by the author with numerous influential experts in the field of studio mixing. The interviews themselves are included for completeness. It starts off well, suggesting it is going to be an in-depth, topic-by-topic consideration of all you need to know. Indeed the book's structure suggests that's how it will pan out. Sadly, it does not maintain this style and becomes increasingly inconsistent as you progress. A prime example of this, and there are several others, is the section on compression, where the author begins by explaining that compression is used to control dynamics and thus make the sound more even - so basic stuff - then launches straight into technical suggestions of specific ratio settings without any explanation of what might be a ratio, a threshold, knee settings and all the gubbins that make compression so complex an issue. Basic, then suddenly technical, like somebody ripped out a few pages in between - or perhaps that the author did not have a clear idea of his book's mission.
This pattern of inconsistency turns the book from a promise of instruction into essentially an anecdotal indulgence. It's worth reading, but only out of specialist interest and only if you already have at least a grounding in mixing technologies.
A further warning - the unflinching bias toward studio-based hardware solutions (a declining sector, as the author himself notes) makes this book of limited use to composers and producers who do everything in a software-based Digital Audio Workstation like Cubase, Sonar or Reason etc.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as shown - very poor quality, 15 Feb. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The picture shown of this item suggests a metal back and black faceplate of undetermined material. But instead, it is in fact one piece of extruded black plastic. That in itself is misleading and a reason to avoid the product. But it's worse than that.
Being plastic, the machining is imprecise, so it does not quite fit in a standard bay, slightly fouling the bay above. Also being plastic, the material is necessarily much thicker than metal would be, too thick for standard computer bolts to pass through. As a result, the supplied extended self-tapping screws must be used. So don't lose the screws or this thing is useless, which it would not be if it were as described.
Had I known this, I would have avoided it. It does the job, but only just, only by my engineering allowances for its shoddy quality, and not in the way I wanted the job done. Put simply, this item is not as advertised. To me, that makes it fraudulent. Such behaviour gets mail order a bad name. So this item should be avoided to punish the lie and demonstrate that misrepresentation is not acceptable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good quality instrument, 6 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Arrived very rapidly, well packaged. Good quality instrument. Not quite as pictured here, instead having the words "Tone Deaf Music" printed on the head. I know it's supposed to be ironic, but it's just the thing for the wits and wags in the audience to latch on to :)
The hole in the side is not big enough to get a finger into, so keeping a sustained grip on it in long fast rhythms might be a tad demanding. For me, those two things bring its mark down to a three.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast delivery, good quality, 3 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Wooden Maracas - Natural Large
Bought these maracas on a whim, because they were offered alongside a tambourine I wanted. They turned up within two days, before the tambourine and much faster than expected. Vendors DJM sent me an email telling me I now have an account with them, but no instructions how to use it, so I'll ignore that and just continue to go through Amazon. I'm not marking them down for that, because I wasn't expecting it anyway.

As to the maracas, good quality, well-made product, surprisingly so for the low price. Nevertheless, they don't look cheap, so fine for stage use. Satisfyingly loud, so you can keep a bit of safe distance from the mic when you're waving them about. Don't know whether it was intended, but usefully they have different tones, one being deeper than the other.

Five stars because expectations exceeeded in several ways.
