5.0 out of 5 stars SEDUCTIVE, FASCINATING, BEAUTIFUL, 15 July 2014
A beautifully written and seductive account of a vision that led to a life transforming journey into the wisdom of Peruvian Shamanism. Rebekah tells her tale so wonderfully; the descriptions are so vivid, and then she brings the wisdom she learned back to the modern world in the hope that it will heal our troubled present. Highly recommended, and having met the author in person, everything about how inspirational she is comes across in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 26 Dec 2013
This review is from: Lark Ascending (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful album. I love Vaughan Williams' music with the exception of one or two of his later symphonies, and the collection presented here is exceptional. The performances are so sensitive and wonderful -- it is deeply moving and beautiful and the Lark Ascending is probably the finest work on it and certainly one of the best interpretations of the many I have enjoyed.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good but very expensive, 24 Nov 2013
I spend a little time at weekends looking after my old boat and at this time of year it can get very cold. Obviously it isn't insulated like a house would be and I tried halogen, ceramic bar and fan heaters and an oil filled radiator and they just ate electricity and were absolutely useless.

The Dyson AM05 looked nice and sounded just the job. I watched some Which? type consumer test videos etc on You Tube and read reviews and decided I really wanted it even though its wickedly expensive. I already have the AM01 fan at home and intend to keep it because on that you can set the fan speed far more precisely than the fan on this one which only has 4 set speeds.

It is a hungry beast (I watched on the eletricity meter while it alone was plugged in and going) but to be honest, after just 10 minutes the room temperature rose from 9.5 C to 18.5 C. I switched it off and over an hour later the temperature was still 16.8 C and over two hours later the remperature had only dropped to 15.9 C. If I only have to have it on for 10-15 minutes every few hours, it will cost me far less than a "conventional" heater which would have to be on all the time to achieve the same effect whilst burning electricty at the same rate. As a happy bonus it also reduced the humidity level from 77% to a much healthier 55% and the level stayed around that level for hours afterwards.

I have never been so warm and cosy there. I had a smile on my face and fewer layers for the first time in sometime and could get on with things without my breath condensating in the air.

The magnetic remote that sits on the top is a great idea, cleaning is easy and it is not unpleasantly noisy (some people have complained it's noisy but given the technology behind it, that would be expected. It's basically jet engine technology after all.) There's no dust burning smell and even on the highest speed, which I didn't use for long (2kw) it was really no noisier than any other fan. Oscillation is silent and spreads the heat across and around the room and it works perfectly well on speed 2 and uses less electricty at a lower setting (1.5kw) You can also tilt it downwards and as hot air rises and circulates this helps spread the warmth even better. You can also direct it nicely. It's very easy to set up and operate. It looks gorgeous, and you can set the exact temperature you want to get the room to up to 37 degrees. That would probably take a while and be far too hot for me, but it's nice to know it can do it.

So why only 4 stars? It doesn't throw the heat out as far as the advertising suggests -- fine for a small area but in a big lounge I doubt it would really live up to expectations. It's also very expensive but a little budgeting elsewhere will be worth it for when I need it's benefits. Let's hope as more people buy them the price comes down for people in the future.

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY disturbing and brutal revenge thriller, 11 Nov 2013
This review is from: I Spit On Your Grave 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Having seen this UK version with 3m 47s of cuts (27 in all) I can only imagine what the uncut US version must be like. I have seen some heavy stuff but this was frequently as close to unwatchable as anything I have seen before. You will definitely need a strong stomach as the protagonist deals out brutal and thoroughly deserved justice on the men who kidnapped, tortured and raped her. Some people criticise the BBFC for telling us what we can and can't watch but sometimes I think their decisions are made for good reasons. Jemma Dallender's performance is absolutely outstanding.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moments of classic Welsh, 11 Nov 2013

Irvine Welsh is a great writer, humorous and dark in equal measure, and excellent at portraying the seedy underbelly of Glasgow -- gangsters, druggies etc. There was some great writing here too, and performances, but the foul mouthed baby story, The Acid House itself, was the stand out. It was worth buying the DVD just for that segment. Absolutely brilliant and if all three parts had been that good I would have given it five stars.

I personally also love listening to the accents and the dialect. I've developed an ear for it now and I just love it :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 13 Sep 2013
There's no doubt that American TV sitcom has been going steadily uphill since Frasier in terms of quality, characters, and humour. Of the current crop, this show is by far my favourite and this box set delivers 24 episodes of wonderful comedy. When you have strong characters and a great cast for good writers to milk, you can't go wrong. Comparisons to Friends are just not valid in my view apart from the fact that the ensemble is about the same size. Friends left me completely cold, but even if you don't generally like the American sense of humour, give this show a watch, and the previous five seasons too :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to expectations and more, 13 Sep 2013
This review is from: Rites Of Spring [DVD] (DVD)
This is a superb horror thriller. In a nutshell, it is fast moving and gory, it has a great score, great cinematography and very good acting plus it's in a beautiful 2.35:1 transfer.

Two stories run in parallel which are seemingly unconnected. Fate brings the characters in the two stories together for a whole new nightmare. One concerns two girls captured by a Satanist who plans to sacrifice them, after some torture, and a kidnap story in which the kidnappers begin to fall apart after kidnapping a senator's daughter.

Very disturbing and not for the faint hearted, building to a frenzied climax, It's a must if you like a good gory horror film and it shows what an indie horror film can be like with a good script, cast and direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really excellent, 13 Aug 2013
This is a wonderful film if you like fast-paced serial killer-type films, mixed with a bit of Hard Candy. Within the first five minutes, you know you're going in to be in for a fast ride. In essence, a woman is abducted, tortured and finally branded by a maniac before escaping. Thinking she has found safety, she is in fact in his lair, where she and another woman attempt to the turn the tables but he is not going to be a willing victim. The female leads are excellent as well as photogenic and the whole film is just a ballet of violence, blood and carnage -- what more could you want from a horror film!

Valerie Aslynn by the way, played Alicia in The Big Bang Theory (The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition) but she's done other stuff too, as has her co-star, Alicia Leigh-Willis. And on this DVD, if you so wish, you can have it in French, or English with French subtitles, as well as plain old English and it's been transferred in a lovely widescreen print.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great take on the classic story, 13 Aug 2013
This was a film I originally got as an ex rental VHS back in 1990 and had been searching for it high and low. Why I liked it -- Jill Schoelen was the perfect Christine, and the horror of the original story was nicely captured. It had some nice sets, nice music, and good performances, plus some good gore. Why the film was relocated to London I'm not sure, but no bother. Shame that the studio presumably, had to spoil a good script with stupid "Freddy Kreuger"-esque one liners ("You're suspended" as a theatre-hand meets his death while dangled on some ropes particularly grated.) Anyway, it lost a star for little things here and there but it was overall a very good film and it was nice to be able to enjoy it again in a nice widescreen print. I got mine from because at the time, that was the only way I could get a Region 2 copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not in your face horror but very unsettling nonetheless, 13 Aug 2013

I had been waiting for this having seen the trailer and was dismayed that it wasn't in any of the stores that generally stock the new horror releases -- thank goodness Amazon had it. It didn't deliver in your face gore but in all fairness it never promised to do so. It is one of those films that knows that within the right atmosphere, horror that is left to the imagination can be as bad or worse than seeing every detail. If you think back to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the screen gore for fairly limited but it was still terrifying. In Roadside, some potential for horror was underplayed but the overall film was creepy and very watchable. It seems to have been called Roadside Massacre originally -- presumably the "Texas" was to help its success in the UK.
