In search of the fifth level . . ., 17 Aug 2002
Jim Collins open a can of worms about how to make companies better - much better!!
The $64,000 dollar question is how do you locate a "Level 5" executive. You can see them when they are in action - but that isn't very often if they were only found in 11 out of 1400 companies studied. How then to find them at the recruitment stage?
It would be nice to think that anyone who has the superficial characteristics of a "Level 5" is one - there is an appealing natural justice in the idea that the humble and self effacing have hidden virtues - but I don't think that we leave with the message that inside every meek executive is a "Level 5".
Perhaps psychometric testing like MBTI analysis? If these guys all turn out to be Myers-Briggs INTPs then Jim Collins is REALLY onto something that transcends the descriptive.
