5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, 25 July 2011
The descriptions and photographs fro each species are very detailed and useful. The only thing I would have like would be slightly space given to more detailed distribution maps.

It is good that Collins have included ferrel and domestic species. One thing I do like about this book is the final chapter which gives advice on observing animals. It is usefulto carry in a rucksack for use in the field.

3.0 out of 5 stars Teaching Language and Literacy in the Early Years, 18 Oct 2009
This book is very useful for parents of young children or educators with little formal training in language and literacy in the early years. Perfect for someone who suddenly finds themselves working in a kindergarten!

"Some people achieve turtles, others have turtles thrust upon them"..... I fell into the latter category and read this book cover-to-cover, then dipped back into for reference when and as needed. I found this book very useful though not quite as complete as I had hoped, although, being new to reptile husbandry, I did find its photographic illustrations very helpful.

This has been on the shelf of my school for several years now and is always an interesting read for newer members of staff. Examples obviously cannot be applied to all levels at all times, but it can inspire a new ESL teacher to come up with their own ideas and activities.

This review is from: What is Zen? (Paperback)
This is one of Watts' posthumous publications -edited by his son, Mark- covering not only the origins and practice of Zen, but also its influence upon both Eastern and Western culture. Watts had a way with words, enabling him to explain eastern concepts in a way which fall easily upon western ears.

Good presentation of common species, however, this is only suited to Canada and the US. Do not buy this if you are looking for a guide to pond life in Europe or Asia.

If you are already using the spelling lists from the smaller books, this will save you a lot of time creating worksheets. Heavy use of synonyms make it somewhat challenging for non-native speakers and perhaps a little more variety in the format of activities could make it more child-friendly, but nevertheless, if you use the "little red book", buy it.

Since its release there have been sufficient changes in the ways in which environmental issues are viewed and described to make this book somewhat outdated, not to mention the lack of recent data to give examples. However, it is very affordable and gives basic principles.
