5.0 out of 5 stars The only DVD of Magic Slim, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Since Magic Slim (Morris Holt) passed away last week, I cherish this DVD even more than before - aside from it being his only available DVD,
it is a good record of Magic Slim when he was still healthy, strong, and vibrant on stage.
Rest in peace big fellow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good to see Bromberg back on stage after years of semi retirement, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
David Bromberg has been a phenomenal guitarist since the late 1960's when he worked as a guitarist for Jerry Jeff Walker and Bob Dylan.
In the 1970's, he toured both as a solo act and with his amazing David Bromberg Band. In 1982, David decided to leave the touring life, and study violin making, and then became a world expert in violin repair, appraisal and trading. In short, for more than 20 years, he hardly appeared on stage more than a few times a year. But since he decided to resume public performance and touring, he has been better than ever. Aside from a few guest appearances on shows by Arlo Guthrie and John Sebastian, there have been no DVDs or video of David available to the public, until now. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who is a fan of good authentic American music!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest contemporary Gypsy Jazz guitarists, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Not enough people have heard the name Angelo Debarre, let alone seen him in live performance,
so this CD plus DVD set definitely helps to correct that.
Angelo Debarre is one of the top contemporary artists who are keeping the Gygpsy Jazz guitar tradition of Dajngo Reinhardt alive.
As popular as the music genre of Gypsy Jazz / Jazz Manouche / Swing Jazz Guitar has become in the last decade, there are still a number of amazing and very deserving artists who simply have not received enough exposure in the world music press. Angelo Debarre is in mind one of the top 3-4 Gypsy Jazz guitarists alive today.

Some very different film showing a very shy side of Jimi speaking candidly to the camera...
The impromptu concert out in a field in Hawaii is also very unusual

1.0 out of 5 stars dull! nothing to get excited about, 8 Jun 2011
The scarcity of Willie Dixon's own recordings might make a fan jump at any new recording that pops up,
but although session may be fine as a movie soundtrack, as a stand alone CD, it is rather dull!
Only 5 of the tracks have singing (plus one track with spoken vocals). The playing on the instrumental tracks is very tame and mundane, and I can't even hear the bass on most of the tracks. so Willie might not even have been present...
As a Willie Dixon fan, I only find 3 songs of interest here -
#3. I Don't Trust Nobody, #8. I Just Want to Make Love to You, and #15. Good Understanding, and #12.
That's My Baby is only mildly interesting...

One Long Tune: The Life and Music of Lenny Breau
One Long Tune: The Life and Music of Lenny Breau
by Ron Forbes-Roberts
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars long overdue biography of a little known Jazz Guitar giant, 22 Mar 2009
This book was many years in the making, and is a long overdue look into the life of Jazz guitar legend Lenny Breau,
a phenomenal guitar player who died tragically (murdered) just as life was really looking up for him again.
The amount of in-depth information on Breau's life has been scarce for many years,
so this well-researched and nicely written book is a "sight for sore eyes" so to speak.
Thank you Ron Forbes-Roberts!

1.0 out of 5 stars money making scheme for the authors, 22 Mar 2009
This review is from: The Secret (Hardcover)
The Secret purports to reveal long lost or long kept secret principles of positive thinking and achieving personal goals. In reality, all these principles have been around for centuries, and one just needs to know how to read and study a little in order to find them.
The book and the movie basically can mislead anyone who would believe in magic or the power of wishful thinking.
In reality, there is no magical or mystical substitute for some good old hard work. Enlightenment does not come in an instant, and neither does success in business or life, even though the media might make us think that it does...
The only people who get rich quickly from this book and movie are the authors and publishers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This isn't just another Gov't Mule CD set - it's a festival!, 19 Dec 2002
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Deep End Vol 1 & 2 (Audio CD)
The price alone could be the incentive to grab this 3 CD set, but the amazing roster of guest artists that perform here and the variety of styles and sounds they each contribute makes this a real music festival. When Gov't Mule bassist Allen Woody died a couple of summers ago, the bereaved Warren Haynes and Matt Abts decided not to hire a new permanent bass player, but the show must go on, so they hired 24 new bass players instead and created a sort of tribute to Allen Woody. The result is the Deep End project, where each song features a different famous bass player and other guest artists. From historical icons Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle, and Bootsy Collins, to contemporary stars Flea, Mike Gordon and Dave Schools, this project is a little encyclopedia of rock and fusion bass players. Guest artists such as John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Little Milton, Greg Allman, John Medeski, and David Grisman also make this set a very ecclectic performance piece.
The third surprise disc contains "Hidden Treasures" - live and studio versions of some of the calssic Mule songs with Chuck Leavell playing keyboards and Dave Schools playing bass on most of the songs. The "Hidden Treasures" is not available anywhere outside this box set, so hard core fans would get this set just for that disc. The humerous cover shot of a mule in a snorkel and mask underwater is worth the price of this set for me!!! Some of the highlights are the acoustic solo version of Soulshine, the more traditional blues numbers Catfish Blues with Billy Cox on bass, and Worried Down With the Blues with Oteil Burbridge on bass, Derek Trucks on slide guitar and Greg Allman on vocals and organ are tracks that I've played over and over again. Beautifully Broken has already become a haunting classic in their live shows, and is also a personal favorite here. Jesus Just Left Chicago, on the bonus Hidden Treasures, rings of Zappa songs from the early 80's, both in musical style and in the irreverent humor. This box set is both a good introduction to those unfamiliar with the Mule, and a festival for the died in the wool fans. Just click "Add to Shopping Basket" and don't ask me no more questions...
