4.0 out of 5 stars Still scary after all these years......., 1 April 2015

I watched the original television production, which kept the UK on tenterhooks for weeks. This is a worthy film version with genuinely scary moments (the towpath sequence with the little girl compares very favourably with the original where it is a boy he encounters). The alien creature's transformation into some kind of octopus is the least satisfactory aspect of the remake (how the hell did it slime its way up a vertical wall?), and Brian Donlevy hams up his characters mercilessly, but all in all definitely worth placing alongside the small number of real British horror classics. Quality of download impressive.

This review is from: Them (Amazon Video)
It's over 50 years since I saw this classic. Obviously some aspects have aged (especially the ants) but the build-up of suspense is masterly and the use of light, wind and sand is superb. James Whitmore is excellent and it's good to see how well his talents have been exploited up to the present day. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake, just to compare (like "War of the Worlds" : two different takes retaining the best of the original with some new twists). Quality of film and sound very impressive.

I need footwear that is robust and waterproof but sufficiently light-weight for my arthritic limbs. These fit the bill, although they are just a tiny bit larger than other size 8 shoes in my possession (but not sufficiently large to take insoles to take up the slack).

Pleasantly simple to unfold (some competitive alternatives follow no logic) and reliably robust: just what one needs during the trauma of total domestic redecoration and off-site storage.

It's worth paying the extra for the robustness of these bags, especially when trying to open them in windy circumstances compared with flimsy cheaper items.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worryingly prescient, 29 Jun. 2014

I first read this novel some 40 years ago and was struck by both its literary style and the way the author focussed on what were then embryonic environmental and political concerns. As the years went by, his analysis has -alas - proved to be all too accurate on all fronts. If one has any concerns about where GM agriculture might be leading us, read this book. If anything, I am much more worried about the future of mankind and the planet on rereading the novel than I was when first I purchased it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing but still a page-turner, 1 Jan. 2014

I feel that the author was pressured into writing this book because people are still hankering after Rebus, and Fox has still to establish himself as the core of the Rankin oeuvre. The result is a rather thin novel where all the characters are more mechanical than substantial, serving only to move the story forward. The detail of people and places that is Rankin's strength is missing. I read this on my Kindle before reading the first Fox novel in book form, and the difference between the two experiences is like chalk and cheese. Of course, I kept on reading because Rankin is too good a writer to fail to deliver in some form or other, but this was disappointing. On the other hand, the Fox novel is a 5-star stunner and I look forward to reading more about him and his world. I can live without Rebus - which, of course, may be precisely why Rankin produced this potboiler.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware if you are an Amazon Audible subscriber, 29 Sept. 2013

I bought the Kubik Evo MP3 player because I lost my audiobook player when on holiday and thought that this would be a slightly cheaper substitute. My audiobook downloads are all from Audible (i.e. an Amazon offshoot). It is only by close examination of the Audible website that I discovered my downloads are incompatible with Kubik products. More disturbingly, the Kubik website appears to have been withdrawn, and Amazon itself is unable to state when and if some Kubik products will be available. My beef is that Audible / Amazon should be more upfront about what works with what. OK: Audible does provide a list of supported player manufacturers, but you have to dig to find it, and it is fairly limited. I'll keep the Kubik for MP3 music, but think that Amazon's blurb should make it quite clear that not all audiobook formats will be supported by Kubik.
