5.0 out of 5 stars Bless you Sister!, 2 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A great book, of an interesting lady - both film star and Nun. Her honesty and frankness are an eye opener..
From Elvis, to a role as Mother in a Monastery!
Interesting pictures from all aspects of her life..
She must be so admired for her frankness and truth.
I really admire the story of Mother Dolores from A to Z.
Who could fail to love her? Even her illness does not stop her life. Wonderful!
God bless you Sister.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anglican Nuns History., 25 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The story of the Foundress of an Anglican order of Nuns. The progress of the local and over seas Mission work done by the Sisters tell interesting tales. Both here or Africa, they did good works from teaching to nursing, etc.
The Order still survives but, smaller nowadays. The Sisters are far less in number, and (as most Orders) gain fewer Novices . Sadly, the lifestyle and habit /dress have altered, for the modern age.
An interesting book of the traditionaldays of the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars High Church stories., 25 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting, sometimes amusing, tales of life of Anglo Catholicism, within the Church of England. For those who were of that part of C of E, it is fun to smile at the various stories. From Priests to Nuns, it spoke of old times, when High Churches were common, and Convents and Abbeys thrived.
Alas, a different picture nowadays - far less to see of Churches or Monasteries!
Sadly, many parishoners left, while others plan to "go over to Rome". For them, the Anglican Church has weakened, thus their move to Roman Catholicism.
A memorary of those "good old days", written in an entertaining manner. How sad that so much has vanished.

Guide to the religious communities of the Anglican Communion

5.0 out of 5 stars Monks and nuns of the old days., 6 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A really interesting guide to the (Anglican) Religious Orders of monks and nuns in the old days. I myself had a copy in the 60s, when my study subject was "religious life".
My many visits to Convents and Abbeys, were fascinating. There were different types of nuns: from teachers to leprosy nurses, from hidden cloistered sisters to foreign missionaries over the globe, etc.
I enjoyed staying at Convents - some friendly and kind, but others rather strict and Victorian!
Sadly, so few of those many Orders exist today. Yet some may still survive, mostly abroad.
How very sad to lose these dedicated Sisters of the past. If only we could have them back!

2.0 out of 5 stars A sincere book., 6 Jun. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mother Angelica (Hardcover)
A rather disappointing book, despite my previous interest in the history. Rather a long book to read; but the photographs were interesting. My own admiration and interest in Mother Angelica, began by various internet sites. Especially the fascinating Monastery ,and the many beautiful young women entering to become Nuns.
An obviously sincere Author of this book, with great loyalty to Mother.
Perhaps a follow up book may one day feature more about the the Religious Order? That would be wonderful indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remembering "Pookie.", 19 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I do remember, as a small child, reading the original tales of "Pookie". These books are reprinted for new readers of today. The art of old is printed for all to enjoy.
"Pookie" is the star, and his cute face and ears are special. The lovingly written stories, colourful pictures and cuddly faces are sheer joy!
The books take us back to a time of whimsy, belief and utter beauty.
What a treat to walk down " memory lane" in the innocent old days, far from today!
"Pookie" - little white rabbit with wings..wonderful..

This book of prayers was a nice surprise. A large collection of many beautiful devotions. There is something for everyone, day by day. The authors of the book are Cistercian monks - hence their sincerity and knowledge.
A warm and helpful tool, to help the lonely or needy, or for anyone in need of prayer.
Thankyou to Father Basil for this treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hello to Sooty!, 19 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: SOOTY'S THIRD ANNUAL (Hardcover)
Hello to Sooty from the good old days! It is so sweet to see the "traditional" looks of Sooty and Co. Taking us down memory lane, especially of childhood.. what a lovely treat!
True, the book was far from new, and marked with a few crayons - but it does not matter. "Retro" art and cartoons, of Sooty, Sweep and their friends.. Even a a bad cat called "Calico Joe", complete with a cigerette, no less! How marvelous to see the "non PC" world, with cheeky behaviors and not controlled by the government, councils etc - wow.
A warm trip down "memory lane", to remind those of a certain age of Britain as it used to be - fun days indded.

This review is from: Holy Cards (Paperback)
This is an interesting collection of many Catholic so-called "holy cards" of Saints in History. Most chosen are of well known names, while others unusual.
Portraits are very beautiful, although a few less so.
Reading the pages is fascinating, and I wish I could cut out my favorites!
A nice, meaningful subject with interesting information and art.
A lovely gift for those who believe in them!
