3.0 out of 5 stars Cursed Region Locking, 23 Sep 2013
No sign of it yet in the US (though a 2014 release date is mooted) so I guess we'll have to order the DVD version because of the region B locking :(

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as I remembered, 11 April 2013
I purchased these books way back in the last years of the 80's and thus would have been a teenager myself then. I really enjoyed them, liking the way that the hero wasn't one of the good guys and the good guys though good were actually quite intolerant of those who didn't live up to their standards.

I found this approach to be refreshing and always looked back upon them fondly. Then recently I found myself revisting them, but the magic was gone I found the book to a bit too plodding in places, it could have probably been trimmed down into two and the writing to be a bit too simple.

I think if I was a young reader again I would still enjoy it a refreshing change from the volumes of troubled Vampires and Zombies that seem to plague what passes for Young Adult literature these days and I still think its stance of the anti-hero is still to be applauded

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Book maybe a little too long, 14 Mar 2013
I can see why many people loved the book and said they were unable to put it down. Similarly I can empathise with those who either gave up or found themselves skipping pages.

I definitely fall between both camps, though I enjoyed the book I definitely found myself looking at the slow rise of the percentage of the way through

***
A humorous aside, you know how when you read a book you develop an image of the characters, well I had a view of Richard as a slim guy, with a small pair of glasses and a fairly sour disposition. Just a moment ago I was reading a very old review of mine of "Caroline in the City" and her love interest was named Richard, he was exactly the image of the Richard I imagined though until now if you'd asked me his name I wouldn't have been able to tell you

2.0 out of 5 stars Not his best, 16 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Though normally quite a fan of Chris's books I feel this was one of his worst. I'm very much in the atheist camp but did find Chris's harrangues against Religious Fundamentalism to become more and more tiresome and had to skip paragraphs that felt as if they'd escaped from a Richard Dawkins novel, just to make it through the story.

That said the story itself was good and was the only thing that kept me going when at times I wanted to just abandon the book.

Another minor issue was the books 1999 setting, pre-millennia angst seems such a long way off, dating the book quite severely

3.0 out of 5 stars A tiresome rant, 22 Oct 2012

Here's a quick summary of the book, 3D is bad, Multiplexes are bad, why can't the whole movie industry make films of the type that Mark likes instead of those that make money

A Piano In The Pyrenees: The Ups and Downs of an Englishman in the French Mountains
A Piano In The Pyrenees: The Ups and Downs of an Englishman in the French Mountains
by Tony Hawks
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.59

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the other books, 23 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I enjoyed Tony's previous books, but I didn't find this one as enjoyable. I found this book to lack any particular focus and didn't seem to lead anywhere and it was a bit of a chore to see the book all the way through to the end. I felt that I could have just cut off at any point and not missed anything

I'm also surprised that other reviewers have complained that the book is unfair to the French as I felt it showed them in a great light and it certainly treated the English and their inability/unwillingness to speak the language equally as badly

I did rather get tired of Tony's lauding of the Rural French way of life over that of London city life, sure we'd all like to live in rural idyls but most of us have to work for a living

3.0 out of 5 stars Amusing but not LOL, 21 Nov 2010

As a big fan of Jimmy I was disapointed to describe this show as amusing. I have all his previous DVD's and found them hilarious but I'm sorry to say that I found this tour DVD to be just amusing rather than side achingly funny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the extras, 10 Aug 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The actual "Who's Ready for Ice cream" is pretty dire, but it only lasts about 30 minutes. However the "Worst night of his life" extra is pure genius. If this had been the main feature more people would be raving about the DVD and certainly not got all those 1 star ratings

3.0 out of 5 stars The difficult 3rd season, 8 Jun 2007

I wish revelation would turn down the sound of their logo that starts each disk, I have to mute the amplifier as it's about 3 x louder than the episodes and people at the end of the street must be looking for the thunderbolt

As usual they're put the episodes onto the episiodes in production order rather than screening order, you should consult something like

[....]

To find out the proper order but personally I just watch them straight through, especially when it involves juggling disks

That said, the picture is good quality and the sound is clear the disks lack any meaningful extras, but for the price I think it's good value.

4.0 out of 5 stars If only History was taught as well at school, 29 May 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The DVD quality is excellent, providing a very clean clear image just looking at the pictures made me want to go and see those rooms for myself.

Starkey teaches history making it far more interesting than I thought possible from all those horrible school day lessons.
