This is one of the most important books of this century. Rupert Sheldrake, with the benefit of serious conventional scientific qualifications, takes the scientific establishment head on by challenging the straitjacket that they have imposed on themselves (and us). He is the modern day Galileo, taking things that clearly occur but are ignored by modern science because they cannot be explained within current scientific thinking. Most famously, "The Dogs Who Know Their owners Are coming Home", the subject of a separate earlier study, charts the ability of animals to know that something is happening far beyond hearing or sight. This and many other examples of unexplained phenomena, are studied in this book and theories propounded as to what may be enabling these things to happen. the theories challenge the whole basis of traditional modern scientific thinking.
This is a must read.

Streams of Consciousness: Hip-deep Dispatches from the River of Life

As the first to review this book, I am assuming that it hasn't been a wild success. This has got to change. i rate this up with AA Luce's Fishing and Thinking and the more recent Blood Knots by Luke Jennings. The author a passionate fly fisherman on stream, river, lake and sea, tells the stories of his expeditions with humour and the right balance of fishing techie stuff. What makes the book stand out from the hundreds of similar books is the theme of the serious illness that his brother has which proves during the course of the book to be terminal. A serious addition to anyone's library.

Set in the wilds of Montana, this book tells the story of a passionate fisherman and lover of the wild trying to come to terms with the human race, with only partial success. With two ladies deeply in love with him, he remains a commitment phobe. All that matters is his newly dug spring creek and defending it from whirling disease and from the law. The sub plot that works best describes his relationship as a rich kid incomer with his farming neighbours. The final reconciliation results in them pooling their fishing to secure the future viability of both estates. My only niggle is that most of the professional guides in the book, and particularly the narrator, have no time for their clients, almost without exception. When i get round to fishing his spring creek, I will try and avoid the proprietor!

This is a remarkable work linking conventional science with cutting edge "spiritual" science. What prevents major advance in conventional science is, as always, fear of ridicule. This book sets out learner where we need to be focused.
