A Higher Call: The Incredible True Story of Heroism and Chivalry during the Second World War
A Higher Call: The Incredible True Story of Heroism and Chivalry during the Second World War
Price: 2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and moving true story, 2 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The focus of this book is an incident during WW2 which lasted only a few moments, involved a USAAF bomber piot and Luftwaffe fighter pilot, and is described here very powerfully and movingly. The bulk of the book up to this point describes in fascinating detail the early life, pre-war flying career and wartime service of the Luftwaffe pilot which provides the context for his later actions. The USAAF pilot is also described but as he was flying on his first mission over Europe there is much less to say. After the incident the tale is taken forward to the end of the war and then the emotional bringing together of both sides of the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective, 30 Sep 2013

All I wanted was a simple and reliable data switch giving me more ports than the 5 on my previous switch which had failed after a few years constant use. This was simple to set up and appears to fit the bill but a few weeks' use is too short to be able to comment on reliability other than to say so far so good!

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have been a magazine article!, 1 Sep 2013

I was intrigued by the title but disappointed with the outcome. I found it overlong, not a particularly interesting read and scientifically unconvincing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amusing and interesting tale of two mature backpackers in Asia, 1 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book out of curiosity because I know Alan slightly and wanted to see what he had got up to in his retirement from our Golf Club. I found it well written, amusing and interesting, and unlike most mainline travel writing because it was very personal and really doing the trip on the cheap using local accommodation and transport rather than tourist facilities. Bev's writing is engaging and descriptive and I'll certainly be downloading Part 2 when it's published.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good balls, poor player!, 1 Sep 2013

Good product but I'm not sure how it compares with the (previous?) design of Warbird balls which I thought also had hex dimples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tightly written and great suspense embedded in iconic location, 2 Jun 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had no previous awareness of this author but was attracted to the book by a combination of conceit as the hero shares my surname and its setting in Edinburgh which I know very well. I was gripped from the opening chapter and having now finished it am eagerly looking forward to reading the second novel in the Inspector McLean series. The author combines a well-written and pacey crime story with accurate and atmospheric use of the backdrop of Edinburgh and its surroundings. There is a supernatural thread running through the story which adds an extra dimension but doesn't detract from the believable progression of the police investigation with its inevitable twists and turns.

Incipio Feather Case for iPhone 3G/3GS - Black

1.0 out of 5 stars Far too brittle, 24 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Within about a month of buying and fitting this iPhone case I have had to scrap it and revert to my original case as the Incipio product not only failed to protect my phone when I dropped it but later on the case started to become chipped and split on the corners and across the back.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good yarn but spoiled by mock historical scenario, 24 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This novel is wound intimately around real historical characters and events but invents stories and relationships between them which (almost certainly) did not occur. It began like an extended Wikipedia entry for the great and the good of the Victorian scientific and medical world but once the fictional elements were introduced they just didn't seem believable, also some of the language put into the characters' mouths felt more modern than Victorian. Not a bad plot and story but it just didn't sit well with the factual historical background.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but predictable, 24 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was quite an interesting read but the general storyline and progression of Easter Jewel was predictable which removed any element of suspense. However, the author has taken the bones of historical fact and fleshed them out into a believable story.
