3.0 out of 5 stars Nice performance, bad compilation, 7 Mar. 2011
The DVD Handel Celebration was recorded in 2009 at London's Royal Albert Hall and is excelently performed by Harry Christophers & The Sixteen on period Instruments. Soprano Carolyn Sampson does a very nice job as well. Alastair Ross (organist) on the other hand had an off night, since he was noticeably struggeling (not sure it was the tempo or the fact that he was standing or... ?). For the performance 5 stars (apart from the organ part which get a humble 2.5 stars).

Luckily the aspect ratio is 16:9 and not 4:3 as mentioned in the Amazon product description. For those that want to enjoy that concert atmosphere (or to relive) beware that this disc is a bit messed up. It is interrupted with an interview with Christophers and a little background story on Handel. The Coronation Anthem My heart is inditing and Salve Regina were moved to the bonus part of this disc due to unknown reason. The audio on the disc is dolby digital, but the bonus tracks are only in PCM stereo! That is a pity, especially since My heart is inditing is nicely performed. Due to this flaws, the compilation get only 2 stars.

I would defintely buy a blu ray version, if I they restore the concert order in full dolby digital and move the background items to the bonus part, what would make much more sense. In that case probably up for 4+ stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful live performance, 4 May 2009
This review is from: Handel: Messiah (Audio CD)
To celebrate the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge and to mark Handel's 250th anniversary of the composer's death a live concert of Handel's Messiah was held at King's College Chapel on April 5, 2009 (Palm Sunday). This concert was broad casted to over 85 movie theaters throughout Europe. The concert was performed by the Choir of King's College, soloists from the Royal Opera House and the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

The conjunction of the orchestra and the Choir is excellent, especially considering this being a live performance. The soloists did a fine job, especially Ailish Tynan (soprano). The sound of the registration is reasonably fine, but could have been better, a bit less direct and more balanced. Maybe the DVD version can convince more in the available surround mode(s). The DVD of this concert will come out later this year.

A beautiful performance that is well worth the buy! I personally find the Hogwood version of the Messiah (Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral) still the best and I can recommend that one if you are into the non massive choir performances.
