4.0 out of 5 stars Not so bad!, 15 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Domino Theory (Audio CD)
I'm mainly writing this review to get the score up to 3 stars which is probably the correct level.
Come on, this album has Db Waltz, a scorching funky waltz tune, raw and live in the studio - you can hear the joy of the players. The Peasant another near classic track.
WR are never less than interesting on this outing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slow burning classic, 1 Sept. 2006
This review is from: The Way Up (Audio CD)
I think this work will become a jazz classic. To me it is a synthesis of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays work over the last 20 years or so but is in no way a retrospective. Having seen this incarnation of the group live you can see a new dynamic and can hear it on this album.

Though the music is not challenging like some of Pats recordings it does take a few run throughs to pick up the compositional thread. Give it a chance.

The cover art is great too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Visions of Distopia, 26 July 2006
This review is from: Ape and Essence (Paperback)
A very under-rated work that should be up there with 'Brave New World'. It envisions a post-nuclear war wasteland - influenced by his life in California at the time. It's a wild ride and unique in Huxley's writing.

Merry Mixmas: Christmas Classics Remixed
Merry Mixmas: Christmas Classics Remixed

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Xmas Fun, 6 Dec. 2005
A good selection of yuletide mixes, most of which feature classic takes on popular Christmas numbers without too much deconstruction, yet with some nifty beats - for example 'Santa Baby'. The remixes move from the raucous Billy May track to a dreamy 'Winter Wonderland' from Bing. Standout track for me is Ursula 1000's take on Julie London's 'I'd Like You for Christmas'.
No one could be offended by this CD, oldies will like the singers and the songs, electronica heads will enjoy the cleverness and everyone else will just enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Punjabi Pop, 1 Aug. 2005
This CD does what it says in the title. A good selection of contemporary pop sounds from the sub-Continent with a Bhangra feel, with a bit of reggae, rai and Bollywood spice along the way. All the tracks were recorded in India, with excellent sound, and this seperates the selection from some of the more home grown Bhangra CDs. ARC music releases don't always hit the spot, but this one does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Yuletide Lounge, 30 Dec. 2004
This album is great! Possibly a better selection that Volumne 1, though they complement each other very well. Buy both if you like your seasonal lounge slightly skewed. Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without hearing Bob Atcher and the Dining Sisters singing 'Christmas Island' - an absolute tiki classic. On the boring technical side, the digital remastered sound on these and all the Ultra Lounge albums is superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Massive Orchestral Soundstage!, 20 Dec. 2004
All lovers of the orchestra should own this album. Church Windows is the stand-out piece and will give your hi-fi a good workout with the superb Chandos sound. Brazilian Impressions is more subtle work and quite unusual compared with Respighis other works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, 26 July 2004
I read this novel with fascination when I was a student (in the late 70's) and was captured by it's themes of study, intellectualism and their relation to the 'real world'.
As a forty-something I've just re-read the work; this time I picked up the human struggle around the purpose and meaning of these things.
Do people still read these types of novels - I hope so.

Hogwwod and his forces bring the Brandenburgs to life. There is always something new to discover in these accounts. A bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exotic Class, 25 Jun. 2004
A great introduction to Martin Denny's work and to 50's 'exotica' if you haven't heard it before. Denny uses a small group with a large amount of percussion and 'ethnic' instruments along with bird and nature calls to produce his music. Listen and transport yourself somewhere else.
