4.0 out of 5 stars Down from Birmingham, 17 Oct. 2013
This review is from: They're In Town (Audio CD)
Thankfully the Rockin' Berries did nothing but cover versions but I should point out the original of You're My Girl was by the Rising Sons-though a versions was also made by the Tokens.
The success of these opportunistic covers was not that surprising seeing as they were here and already known through Thank Your Lucky Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Hits or flops its all good, 16 Oct. 2013
The Berry Gordy labels created their finest music in the early years and so much music went out you can't help but wonder why as much went into the vaults to be finally resurrected with the 8 CDs in the Cellarful Of Soul series
Read about Berry Gordy on the Valadiers website and you learn that he rejected many songs which came out later as massive hits eg Marvin Gaye's I Heard It Through The Grapevine

1.0 out of 5 stars The music's fine the sleeve is atrocious, 16 Oct. 2013
Fortunately you can always change a sleeve but this is worse than all those cheapo cheapo LPs of sound-alikes in the 70s.It makes me feel ill

5.0 out of 5 stars Return of a lost art, 15 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Answer Ballads (Audio CD)
Not exactly answer version in the sense that they use the same tunes but a previously never attempted formula where the story in the original song is carried on and updated. Thus as one example the character in Dolly Parton's Jolene takes her plea to heart and becomes a nun
These songs would make little sense to anyone not being familiar with the originals and a check on the lyric booklet is recommended.
I take it that Maggie's Song means Rod Stewart's Maggie May and not the Liverpool folk song Maggie Mae

You Must Remember These - Songs From The Early Decades - Various Artists
You Must Remember These - Songs From The Early Decades - Various Artists
Offered by Revival Books Ltd
Price: £6.19

5.0 out of 5 stars Readers Digest is never ending, 14 Oct. 2013
The songs are famous but not in these versions which come from various 50s and 60s singers.
These double albums can be found sometimes in Charity shops and in the first place available on subscription rather than the HMV computer

5.0 out of 5 stars 100 hits seems to be stretching it, 14 Oct. 2013
Note that the Rubettes use of the word "showaddywaddy"-which came from the Diamonds' Little Darlin' preceeded Showaddywaddy by a matter of months.
But whatever compilations are assembled you'll always get people complaining that some song is missing
I'd rather it was full of covers instead of their own songs which never even spawned any covers
Useful in that it includes the 70s and 80s songs

101 Children's Songs and Nursery Rhymes
101 Children's Songs and Nursery Rhymes
Offered by westworld-
Price: £20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't really fault this one, 12 Oct. 2013
Those who complain about this CD have only themselves to blame for buying it instead of checking just what else is available
Such as the Australian one 200 Greatest Nursery Rhymes Ever which lists the names of all the singers and offers complete versions (bearing in mind that many Nursery Rhymes were only snippets to begin with eg Lucy Locket)

The Complete Herd: Singles A's and B's
The Complete Herd: Singles A's and B's
Price: £9.95

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything here, 12 Oct. 2013
The cleverly named group whose publicity was able to use the blurb "Have you heard the Herd" had begun as the Preachers in 1965 with the usual R & B covers.By 1967 the music was closer to psychedelia with songs written by Tin Pan Alley writers Howard/Blaikley.One album 3 hit singles but no American career to speak of and by the end of the decade member Peter Frampton had teamed up with a Small Face to form Humble Pie who had I hit. Then some 7 years later Frampton became a huge star in the States with a live album which spawned 4 hit singles.
Which is a brief history of what this 2 CD set is about which has a 14 page booklet inside

5.0 out of 5 stars Down the old plank road, 12 Oct. 2013
10 of the most familiar Guthrie songs recorded in Nashville with top session men like Grady Martin this may be the first actual tribute to the man who inspired Bob Dylan who had written an earlier song called Tribute to Woody Guthrie on his first album.
