Be careful if you use it in a microwave. The first bowl exploded outward with a two inch circumference ; jagged and shattered. I'm not attempting the rest - Oh and one bowl was chipped.

5.0 out of 5 stars TREASURE, 25 Mar. 2012

This review is from: Treasure Island [DVD] [1950] (DVD)
This is Disney's stab at R.L Stevensons Treasure Island. It contains a host of British character actors who eschew their impeccably clipped received pronunciation for piratical sea speak of the first order; burrs abound where the likes of Robert Newton,Basil Sydney and Geoffrey Keen put in the kind of performances that would grace any pantomime anywhere. The plot concerns a search for a treasure that once belonged to the infamous Captain Flint that has been buried on an island in the Caribbean. Characters with such wonderous names as Billy Bones,Blind Pugh, Israel Hands, Darby Morgan,Ben Gunn and Long John Silver all come into play in search of the buried treasure. On the side of the angels we see Catain Smollett, Jim Hawkins, Squire Trelawney and Dr Livsey. All set sail on the good ship Hispaniola.

As this is Disney we see everything from the point of view of young Jim Hawkins played by the tragic Bobby Driscoll ( an early death through drug abuse ). The ensemble playing is hugely enjoyable where nautical terminology saturates everything; " Ease off a point on the rum", "Well blow me down for an old sea carf"," I'm as dead as pork and I knows it" roll off the tongues of the players as if they were born for the sea.

The photography is excellent with some outstanding matte shots. If you can accept Disney this is an enjoyable hoot of a film for the pirate in us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars CUSHING BY CUSHING, 10 Nov. 2010
Peter Cushing recalls salient and influential incidents of his life and career. For Cushing afficionados it's invaluable. For others it's packed with anecdotes and interesting insights that are always entertaining. The actor's impeccably trained tones are used to good effect as he is effectivley playing himself and appears to be enjoying himself despite the underlying saddness that was always with him after the death of his beloved wife Helen

5.0 out of 5 stars Holmes Run, 10 Nov. 2010

This review is from: Sherlock: Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
This is a modern day rendition of Holmes and Watson. It s slick, quick has excellent characterisation and is filmed in a manner to keep one on one's toes.

The modern day London setting didn't matter to me at all as the lead actors performed with much aplomb being both instantly recognisable from previous incarnations and easily fitting into the present day.

The plots are an amalgam of Conan Doyles' original stories with modifications allowing them to fit in with their modern settings.

It's a hoot from start to finish.

An absolute hoot of a film. British actors play Americans ( You haven't lived until you see Percy Herbert playing a confederate soldier) along side Americans who play Americans and Herbert Lom plays Herbert Lom as only Herbert Lom can.

The plot concerns a Jules Verne escapade where a blown away balloon carries a reg tag ensemble to a remote island somewhere in the South Seas. Before long they encounter very large crustaceans and other critters ( courtesy of special effects whiz Ray Harruhausen ).

Total fun and udemanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Journey To The Centre Of The Earth, 9 Jun. 2009

This is the kind of film that Saturday matinees were invented for. It's an adventure film following six people and a duck - I kid you not - as they attempt to follow in the footsteps of Arne Saknussem to the centre of the earth.

The cast led by James Mason acquits themselves as one would expect and for those with a musical bent there's Pat Boone who augments or detracts from the film depending on your point of view with a strange Scottish brogue and at least one song.

The special effects are excellent.
