5.0 out of 5 stars A classic recording....not to be missed!, 22 Oct 2014
Endorse the favourable remarks from the previous commentator. This is mesmerising playing caught in superb Decca sound engineering. These works are undoubted peaks in the Romantic piano repertoire and these performances recorded late in Bolet's career demonstrate his clear affinity with this composer...not as if there could ever be any doubt and certainly no doubt in my mind. This is truly outstanding music making.

Recently purchased on Amazon despite the fact the verified purchase tag isn't coming up...can't see the point of having this tag if it doesn't always work, especially when I have bought several CDs in these series here!

5.0 out of 5 stars memorable...what's not to like?!!, 21 Oct 2014
Bolet and the LSO under Ivan Fischer provide highly distinctive performances that balance musicality with Lisztian virtuosity in a superbly engineered CD that remains special even after some thirty years since it was recorded. Hugely enjoyable and this completes my set of these Decca Liszt volumes performed by Bolet. Although I purchased this only days ago here on this site I notice that sometimes verified purchases don't appear quite as they are supposed to with a tag confirming a verified Amazon purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic performance, 9 Oct 2014
This review is from: Tristan Und Isolde (Audio CD)
This legendary 1966 Bayreuth cast, led memorably by Nilson and Windgassen, under the inspired direction of Bohm deserves the critical acclaim it has received over the years. The entire cast, chorus and orchestra recorded in a warm Bayreuth glow, make this essential listening. This remains one of my reference points for this opera along with the EMI Furtwangler, the live digital Bernstein and the DG Carlos Kleiber sets. All of these sets bring searching illumination to this masterpiece. This treasurable recording deserves a place in any serious Wagnerian collection. I keep returning to this marvellous live recording which for me remains one of the finest recordings Bohm ever made. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational performances caught in very good sound recordings, 9 Oct 2014
Another outstanding disc in the acclaimed Decca series of recordings Bolet made late in his career. The recorded sound both analogue (1978 Kingsway Hall) and digital (1985 St Barnabas Church London) brings out detail richly and clearly and Bolet plays with remarkable sensitivity and power in shaping these works: each being examples of fascinating playing. I listened spellbound. The Consolations were an enriching discovery for me and I have never been more entranced by the Reminiscences de Don Juan than in this recording. I have only another couple of discs to go to complete my purchases of this Bolet Liszt cycle which represents a magnificent achievement as performances and recording sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars The playing and recording of the very first piece in ..., 8 Oct 2014
The playing and recording of the very first piece in Year 2, I Sposalizio, was sufficient to win me over to the outstanding merits of this CD. Bolet brings both a powerful imaginative sensitivity and strength to these works and the early Decca digital recording brings a rich clarity that allows the dynamics and colouring of the playing to shine through. It is only recently that I have purchased these discs as a late but essential discovery!

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound readings that justify the critical acclaim received...snap up these Bolet volumes of Liszt when you can!, 8 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bolet's artistry brings out the poetry and strength of Year 1 in a superbly recorded reading, which was on it's release a Gramophone award winning recording. This is a breathtaking performance in which virtuosity is fully engaged in realising Lisztian inspiration. Bolet here towards the end of his career, for me, makes an easy first choice recommendation for Suisse as I have not discovered any rival for these imaginatively searching readings, as much as I value the celebrated Berman DG cycle and even the digital Brendel account of Year 1 on Phillips which is a recording that tends to divide opinion. There can be no doubt that this is very special music making and i only wish I had bought these Bolet Liszt volumes when they were first released.

5.0 out of 5 stars virtuosity at the service of music, 6 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is nothing self-aggrandising in this superb recording. Bolet brings out the poetry, the colours, in vibrant performances that resonate in the memory and this can be said of the other volumes in this series of acclaimed Decca digital recordings which I am only collecting now some thirty years since they were made. I had long admired his approach contained in the sampler disc I have had for twenty years but never really explored further until listening more recently has led me to buy the entire set of recordings. These performances represent a remarkable artistic achievement at the close of Bolet's career.

5.0 out of 5 stars A legendary recording that delivers at every level....outstanding playing superbly captured as a recording!, 5 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Truly inspirational performances of the Mozart 21st and 25th piano concertos beautifully recorded in the 70s, in which soloist, conductor and orchestra are wonderful. This is great music making and this recording deserves the acclaim it has received over the years as other commentators have already mentioned. I only discovered this disc recently. As much as I admire the soloist and conductor, I felt that I had enough outstanding versions of these works on CD in my collection and didn't really need another version. How wrong I was! snapping it up extraordinarily cheaply on here I couldn't resist the bargain price and discovered the penguin guide was spot on for all these years. In short, music making of breathtaking quality always deserves to be heard!

5.0 out of 5 stars very special Haydn readings, 29 Sep 2014
Even after all these years this is still the benchmark recording of these three early symphonies. The previous review says it all really, as this is a very special disc, and the only other recording that matches it as performances and is even much richly recorded is Marriner in superb digital sound with ASMF.

Snap it up when you can...and Marriner...both are essential listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly desirable Dvorak CD, 26 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A highly desirable disc that recently completed my set of the Dvorak symphonies under Jarvi with the SNO. It is hard to believe that well over twenty years have passed since this cycle was started and completed within a few years as these recordings still come up as fresh as if they were recorded more recently. The Chandos sound remains impressive as do the performances which are well characterised by Jarvi and played with great feeling by the SNO. This is an outstanding account of the third symphony, which together with the classic Kertesz reading are now my key choices for this score on disc. As with the rest of the Jarvi cycle everything sounds so naturally just right, spontaneous, sensitive, colourful and vibrant...so wonderfully alive. The Carnival Overture is energetically captivating and Jarvi shapes a very fine performance of Symphonic Variations. This is hugely enjoyable music making.
