This is a compilation of more than two thousand quotations on the topics listed.
Unfortunately, they are listed in simple alphabetical order, including articles and prepositions, which makes it difficult to locate half-familiar quotations.
Worse, so is the index of authors, so that all 'Sirs' and all 'Lords' come together, Authors are listed by first name then second name so that all Arthurs come together.
Only authors are given,(apart from a few books) so that quotes cannot be followed up. For example, there is no hint that 'Sir Humphrey Appleby' is a character in a BBC comedy program. This could be a nasty trap for the unwary user.

4.0 out of 5 stars A truly stimulating work, 17 Nov 2013

This is a valuable collection of paradoxical observations, both entertaining and thought provoking.
As a statistician, I was particularly interested by the later parts, but it will be interesting to anyone seriously, or frivolously, interested in thinking.
It should be required reading for students enduring the 'sausage machine ' approach to basic statistical methods, or anyone inclined to pontificate about either frequentist or Bayesian probability.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hidden fault, 30 July 2013

This review is from: Lcd Monitor 17 inch (Electronics)
This monitor is incompatible with the raspberry pi computer for which it was purchased.
An expensive, and practically unavailable convertor is required, even when the correct connector - not supplied-
is available.

this is a disappointing snippet of a vast compilation. It tells you too much or too little about uninteresting things

best of a very long series - on a more human scale than later books, which are on a far too large scale

3.0 out of 5 stars Function,Jim, but not as we know it, 30 Oct 2012

Rather a disappointing book. It begins with a very rapid survey of basic features of graphics. It continues with personal experiences of a spanish/portuguese designer of newspaper graphics. These would be more interesting if they were printed on a scale large enough to read, preferably translated into English. The authour is mainly concerned about appearance, rather than use, and admires some graphics condemned by Tufte as 'chart-junk'.

A second portion discusses information graphics. This is a notoriously difficult field to discuss, and, although the author makes considerable efforts and provides generous links to on-line sources, he does not really overcome the difficulty of discussing dynamic processes in the static form of a book.

The book is bulked out with interviews with ten 'prominent' graphics designers, occupying pages 212-350. The author does not conceal his personal friendship with the interviewees, but the results have an unfortunately obsequious air.

I am an experienced, but rusty programmer. I used QuickBasic for some years to program simulated interfaces and their interactions, a task very similar to writing games. When Microsoft abandoned QuickBasic in favour of Visual Basic, I found considerable difficulty, not with the object-oriented approach but with the actual implementation of the program.

Liberty Basic is sufficiently close to QuickBasic that I can transfer prograsms . This excellent book goes over the bassics of Basics (so to speak), pointing out the significsnt differences and 'holding your hand' while you begin.

It is simply and well written, and has got me over the initial hurdle. It is not an encyclopedia, so you will need to refer to the on-line documentation for much of the detail.

It does what it says on the packet, and if you do what you need to do, you will end up with what you want. No book can transfer knowledge without some effort by tyhe reader. I urge you to perform all the exercises, even (especially!) if you think you know it all already.

This is the English Language version of the cabaret songs banned by the Nazis in the later thirties. Ute Lemper brought them into prominence, originally in German -where they perhaps sound better. The rasp of 'Raus mit der Menner" is difficult to replicate in English.

Nevertheless, this is valuable mmemorial to some gallant opponents of the Nazis and all they stood for. Much of this record is, alas, still relevant today - perhaps more so than a few years ago.

Lemper deserves much credit for her championing of these songs. If there is a German equivalent of the OBE, she should be given it.
