5.0 out of 5 stars Another 'must have', 27 July 2012
I've had this book for more than a year now, I'm reviewing the paperback version, and yes I bought it myself.
I've reviewed several other Kimball books and in my opinion, this is another 'must have'.

Although it's essentially a compilation of articles written by Dr. Kimball, Margy Ross, Joy Mundy, Bob Becker and Warren Thornthwaite, it's so much more than just that.
The emphasis is well placed on the customer view, understanding and getting the business rules right, and to use technology for business objectives.
The articles range from late 1990's to today, they've been updated and expanded where needed, so now align with current best practices promoted by the Kimball Group
It can be read cover-to-cover, but if you're like me, you'll jump into sections, then search through for articles as needed, then read whole chapters

I personally prefer the index in the paper edition, it's been said this allows ready access to the book's contents that a text search doesn't provide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Latest version - buy it, 23 Dec 2011

I paid for this book myself and have several of the previously published books by Wiley:

The clearly written guide describes the suite of Microsoft data warehousing technologies and tools in the context of the widely respected Ralph Kimball design techniques that are generally realised as being best practice in the field. Expert advice is provided on how to best-use these tools to build your robust B.I. solutions.

This book is an update on the 2005 version but stands on it's own as a self-contained and comprehensive guide. The guide's strength is keeping the explanations in MS SQL2008 R2 context while you learn and harvest the many useful tips provided.

Buy it, read it, use it, read it and the other Kimball guides again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kimball Group - read this to boost your skills and career!, 5 April 2009

Another totaly must-have book by the Kimball Group. This 2nd edition is a great improvement over the original (which was published 10 years ago), with lots of new material and some re-visits on previous older but still relevant aspects.

This is a must read for anybody aspiring to DW/BI guru-dom.

Expert advice is provided on how to best-use these tools to build your robust B.I. solutions.

This book builds on the previous Data Warehouse Toolkit, Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit, and Data Warehouse ETL Toolkit books, but it stands on it's own as a self-contained and comprehensive guide. Chain this book to your lap-top as your colleagues will be after it in no time!

Fantastic value - keeps the kids (and the older ones) happy for ages.
Attention to detail combined with sheer fun make these ultimately watchable.
Don't wait for them to appear on TV, watch them now!
