5.0 out of 5 stars Got it for a friend, 22 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As the title implies, I got it for a friend of mine. I haven't read it personally, but he has. Being an avid fan of Manchester United and its renowned and now retired coach, he says this book is spectacular. You know what, I trust him, and you should, too.

Yep, that's how I got it - looking sad and leaking. Can't say I was satisfied by this greeting, even less so with the fact that this was supposed to be a Christmas present. Was not happy, indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Media Studies student should get this, 22 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's a comprehensive and, most importantly, understandable guide to the cultural industries and the theories that be. One of the best, if not the best, books on the subject. David Hesmondhalgh is a big name in his field, and I now see why.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't trust this guy, he worked for the Biased Cobblers Corporation! That's what the BBC stands for nowadays., 22 Feb 2014

This review is from: A History of the World (Hardcover)
Three very concise reasons why you shouldn't waste your money on this book:

Incomprehensible writing - he jumps from point to event to place to famous figure in giant bounds, and not always in that order.

Chock-full of inaccuracies - he unabashedly declares all of Europe's great achievements as just blatant imitations of the Muslim genius and brushes off the French revolution as a tragic mistake. While the Golden Age of Islam is a culturally and scientifically significant event, to state something as facetious as Marr did is nothing short but an insult to our ancestors, and this is especially true for the French revolution, which gets me to my final point:

Biased - sweet mother of God, is this guy full of it! His tone is painfully right-wing and his liberal slant glares at you vividly right from the first chapter. He has no qualms about spitting on the cultures and thinkers that paved the way to the world where one could freely speak their mind with such disrespect. Nothing wrong with being right wing or liberal, but when you undertake a burden like this one, you don't get it right - you get it neutral.

My advice is, avoid this book like the plague, unless you purposefully want to explore the world's past through the whimsical eyes of a 21st century Western capitalist.

That's quite a lot of protective membranes for a very good price. A comprehensive application method and a bunch of helpful stickers for when you want to remove a membrane or just want to clean off some dust. Has a neat cleaning napkin, too!

Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang (Oxford Paperback Reference)
Oxford Dictionary of Modern Slang (Oxford Paperback Reference)
by John Ayto
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary but nothing more, 22 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The title says it all - it's a dictionary. No more, no less. Don't expect any winding tales of word and phrase origins, because you won't find any. Why? Because this is a dictionary, not an etymology book. What do you want, a genie to pop up only to tell you to bugger off (buy it, and look that one up)? You get your money's worth, and that's more than I can say for most books these days.

Dragons and Dragon Lore: A Worldwide Study of Dragons in History, Art and Legend (Forgotten Books)
Dragons and Dragon Lore: A Worldwide Study of Dragons in History, Art and Legend (Forgotten Books)
by Ernest Ingersoll
Edition: Paperback
Price: 5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Beware of irritable creationists, 22 Feb 2014
Don't be fooled by the patronizing tone of the fellow reviewer who gave this concise narrative a 3-star grade.

The book itself might not be as comprehensive as some might expect, but the insight is worth every dime. Ernest Ingersoll was an aspiring writer and explorer with an even more invigorating passion for all things natural. Dragons, too, were not above his scope, and you will find this for yourself if you pick up this read.

However, as the title of this review suggests, if you're one of those people who would rather believe in a talking snake than accept the reality around them, then you might find this book hard to digest.
