If you know London, especially in the 40s and 50s, don't miss this. The contrast between this area and the rest of London is surprising, and it is amazing that this is how life was 60 years ago.
But some of the sparkle of Jennifer Worth's writing has faded by this time in the saga. There are still the accounts of these nurses helping these people in dreadful circumstances, and of their horrendous histories - but there is a sense of "let's get this finished and out of the way"

A lot of this was in the TV series - but a lot of detail wasn't. Its hard to believe people were still alive from the workhouses for so long after the war - and even harder to believe that there was such inhumanity and cruelty in the first place, or that it could ever have been thought to be a good thing. I hope that government policies don't lead to something similar being needed again.

This review is from: Egypt (Blue Guides) (Paperback)
I bought this book because we were going to Egypt but found it impossible to read before we went, really heavy - but after visiting the temples and the other sites, it was brilliant to remind me what they were all about and to explain more while it was fresh in my mind. So if you are interested in history of Egypt, rather than just visiting for the sun, this is for you

As someone who grew up in London in the late 1940s and 50s, I found this book absolutely fascinating - a totally different parallel universe 5 miles away from my home in south east London. I saw and heard the ships on the Thames, passed them on the Woolwich free ferry, but knew nothing of the dockers and their families and their homes. Their lives didn't seem to have changed much since Victorian times. I could'nt put it down

Just right for the job where we need to cut grass and weeds away from home. Easy to carry, the battery recharges quickly and the appliance cuts the grass well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lanzarote Sunflower Guide, 8 Feb. 2010

As always with Sunflower books, this was very useful on our trip to Lanzarote, especially as it was too windy for the beach. There's info about all the interesting tourist places as well as the walks and car tours. But it is 10 years old and there has been some building since then so you have to allow for that when you are following the walks. Some of them are almost too detailed, you think you have reached a landmark but then you realize no, its not yet. But using the maps as well we didn't get lost!
If you want to do Walk 15, the guided walk on Timanfaya, book in plenty of time - we phoned up as soon as we arrived - like this book and others recommend - in January, but by then they were booked up until the end of February.
If you like walking and seeing the countries you visit, don't leave the country without your Sunflower Book
