Not quite!, 6 Oct 2009
'Not quite' is the feeling I'm left with after a listen.
The previous albums have featured Sia (AMAZING), Sophie, Mozez and Tina Dico. The mixture of these people have given Zero 7 an identity and a quality. They are like the icing on the cake for me. This album is lacking in icing!
Sia brought so much to the vocals of previous BIG zero 7 songs, she also brought in a lot with the writing side of things! This album to me is missing 'the' song. With the previous albums there have always been a selection of songs that you just think....wow....but I haven't got that with this album.
As for seeing them live - Bristol was the 5th time I've seen them and I was honestly disappointed. The previous 4 times have been amazing - each better than the last. This time there was no focal point. No 'front man'. Jose Gonzalez, Mozez, Sia etc these are all great front people and they weren't there.
There was a little impish girl trying to be twee but failing miserably. Look at me with my strange flower rings and my beads. She ended up folking up some big Zero 7 songs and in my ears they failed miserably. Waiting Line sounded like some nasty lounge version sung by Caren Carpenter as did speed dial no.2! I just spent the whole gig shouting 'WHY' in my head. Don't do Sia songs without Sia, Don't do Tina Dico songs without Tina Dico. These are great great singers - NO!!!!!!!!!
The album's good but no hairs stood up on the back of my neck!!
