5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend!, 7 Feb. 2013

Lee Jackson has a well developed eye for Victorian London. Even as 21st century London -- all muscular, glassy, and filled with petrol belching machines and noxious industrial sound -- streams around us Jackson's book brings a pivotal age alive through beautiful photographs and historical narrative.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating developmental study!, 7 Feb. 2013

What a huge -- and successful -- undertaking for filmmaker Michael Apted. Following these people from childhood into late middle-age we find them reflecting on life journeys that might have surprised us at the beginning of the series. At age seven posh and precocious John appeared to be setting out on a preordained life of privilege. In 56 Up we learn there were financial hardships along the way and a rather priggish child develops into an international philanthropist. By the age of 14 Sunny Sue from the East End had chosen to attend a comprehensive school over a grammar where she would have had to work harder. But at 56 she demonstrates that her good work ethic and natural ability, along with a surprising fluidity within British professions, has propelled her up the ladder to become a senior university administrator. I found every story in this series to be compelling, but perhaps the most poignant was the journey of the adorable 7-year old boy from the suburbs who travelled through mental illness and homelessness to emerge integrated into a rural community that valued him.
Highly recommend this whole series!

Elizabeth Jane Howard, one of 20th-century England's most gifted writers, creates characters that stay with us forever. The Beautiful Visit is her first novel, written when she was in her mid-twenties. The poignant story of a lonely young girl, it carries the reader along with a heroine who reminds us of ourselves when we were young, vulnerable, and confused. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dangerous, but fascinating, 15 Dec. 2007
This review is from: A Most Dangerous Woman (Hardcover)
I very much hope Mr. Jackson doesn't leave us hanging about the future of Sarah Tanner, the very interesting heroine he introduces in his newest book. As always, the historical details that flesh out his stories are scrupulously researched, giving the narrative an authentic foundation and bringing the stories to life. I could almost feel the fog's mist and hear the hansom's wheels clattering over the cobblestones. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars An authentic peek into a pivotal era and a fantastic resource for historians and writers, 13 Jan. 2007
I happened upon A Dictionary of Victorian London some years ago when I was exploring the web in search of background material for a novel. Since then I have returned again and again to Lee Jackson's vastly comprehensive web site. Mr Jackson has now selected the best bits for publication. It is full of primary resource material and is a fascinating read for anyone seeking authentic Victoriana. Highly recommend!
