1.0 out of 5 stars THE WALLIAM'S WORST BOOK, 15 Jun. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I'm a huge fan of David Walliams, from Little Britain to Grandpa's Great Escape and all the books before that.

The comparison with Roald Dahl, no doubt aided by the initial illustrations by Quinten Blake and then Tony Ross, is a good one, though in fairness to the master, the student owes much to the master and hasn't done more than bring his oeuvre into the new millennium.

Sadly this latest volume adds nothing to either Walliams or Dahl's legacy. A collection of pen sketches of naughty kids, the mini-tales are weak. From massive flood causing dribbles to gigantic bogeys/bogies, at times, or most of them the quality of the illustrations and paper-stock ( the first hard-back edition) far, FAR, outshone the writing, imagination or enjoyment of the written word.

I'm a fan, not a critic, so am sorry this came out. Even the inclusion of Raj Feels like a "throw on" to gain loyal readers empathy, but sadly back-fires.

5.0 out of 5 stars McLean's - Brighter Smiles Between The Covers, 19 Dec. 2015

Another cracking good read, no.7 in fact, in the Inspector McLean series. Great gift idea for detection fiction lovers. This, like most of the McLean series, are stand alone novels, so here is a page turning exciting read even if the characters are new to you.

This latest tale is set in Tokyo, behind the wealth, politeness and traditions lie several darker sides spun into a dark but compelling read. Adventure meets exoticism, epicurean delights and spot-on detection wherever McLean and his team appear. I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific read, would make a brilliant and topical film too!, 17 Dec. 2014
I confess to two henious crimes, a) buying this on Kindle after buying the previous four McClan mysteries on paper and b) writing a review while still only 3/4 in.

"Why?" you might ask.

Because its so damn good and at this season of gift-giving and holiday breaks it would be mean to rob you of the chance to enjoy a good read.

I've lived all five volumes out so far, but this is the best ... Topical, humorous in parts, well-rounded characters and a great tale that anyone with a phone, pc, or internet access will be able to relate to.

Excellent book.

Well done Mr. Rudlin. Hope no.6 is not far away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlike his other works and a very good read, 10 Nov. 2014
It's very tempting to compare this book with Murakami's 1Q84, in which I suggest "don't"!

It's shorter and not as multi-layered but its a very good book in its own right and rather a sensitive one at that.

I enjoyed it, recommend it and think it deserves a 4.6 which makes it a 5.

Plot Twist (An Inspector McLean Mystery)
Plot Twist (An Inspector McLean Mystery)
by David W. Rudlin
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.50

5.0 out of 5 stars What are you waiting #4? A romp of a read!, 30 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you haven't discovered David Rudlin's Inspector McLean series yet, you are in for a treat. If you have, this is a cracking 4th volume in the series and a sequel to the first one. The nefarious villain Clifford Watkins turns up early, but dead (that's not a spoiler).
The question is "who dun it?" And that is where a page-turning, compelling twist to the plot comes in.

Highly enjoyable, highly recommended. Good plot and I have gotten to know and love the three key protagonists, Ian McLean and his two sidekicks Thomas and Sally, more and more with each volume. Author ... please keep them coming. Hope they make it to TV one day (soon).

I wasn't tickled.

People who bought this book seem to have read and enjoyed a whole load of other books I loved too ( well Amazon would know and their recommendations are normally excellent). This time the algorithm was off or I was or the book was. I struggled for about 20 pages then threw it away. Most books I enjoy I pass on to friends but this one no.

Maybe I was in a weird mood. Maybe not. Not a fan anyway.

Very funny read. Maybe not quite up there in the humor stakes in comparison with The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of The Window but a cracker nonetheless.

Third in the Inspector McLean series, author and diamond cognoscenti , David Rudlin has written another winner.

From London to Hong Kong and Beijing, this is a fast moving thriller with a good few dry smiles too.

Highly recommended ( if you haven read Diamond Blues, do yourself a favour and order at same time).

Will there be a book 4 and beyond! Certainly hope so, good reading and would make a very good TV series too.

Well researched, well written and a must read for those interested in Marathon running. The here's name will be familiar, his history not. Great stuff!
